NO MUSIC COLLECTION Hard Drive?? WTF

I am awaiting my 2021 M340 and watching lots of videos on the car and the IDrive 7. Tonight I find out that it has NO hard drive to store a music collection.
Look, I KNOW I am am old school but W T F!?!?! I saved my collection from my last car on a stick so I could transfer it over and now I hear the 21 MY cars have no hard drive to store my music.
That blows.

This is super old school but I suppose they're just adapting to the marker. Realistically no one uses hard media anymore for music... sure there are one offs but majority speaking? We're in a streaming world and have all the content and more that we could possibly need on our mobile devices.

I am sure they are adapting to the market, but there are a few of us over 50 who buy BMW's and likely still have digital music. This topic is hilarious as I am not happy we no longer get a CD player, but I can live with that...it just seams like this -- how hard is it to put a stupid 1 inch by 1 inch chip in a car to allow me to save my own songs into my car? It just isn't that difficult or expensive...

32 GB of space for music is/was a joke anyway, so you are not losing much.
A decent usb-c stick in the armrest is the way to go.

Yossi can I do that? Just leave the stick plugged in and play music off of that? Please tell me that will work!

Sure! I have an 128GB usb pendrive plugged in and I just select it like any other audio source. Works exactly like playing files from the music collection, which now I don't use at all.

Definitely works, super easy to do, leave it there permanently. The placement of the USB connector does leave the thumbdrive sticking out in a very vulnerable position. I would recommend a short USB extension cable so you can leave the thumbdrive sitting low in the armrest storage area.

I use one of these. Hardly anything sticks up from the USB port in the cup holder area.

A small USB stick works great for me, I happen to use SAMSUNG Fit Plus 256GB. BMW can play MP3, FLAC and probably some more formats.

You can also check threads:
USB stick size and file format?
USB port for music

You can get a USB-C HDD and format it I think exFAT or FAT32 and store your music on there and plug it into the port in the center storage. Hard storage of music is basically dead. Most use cloud music service now or at least load them on their phone HDD and play over bluetooth.

Roger that. I am going to do that, but even doing that it is my understanding that in this car the music either plays songs in a row and when you start the car all over again the music starts all over again playing the same songs, or you can random play songs...that you can't choose a song to play.

Why would they put an assistant in the car so I can talk to it -- the reason apparently is so that I DO NOT have to take my hands or eyes off the road, except when I need to pick up my phone to play a song?? That makes sense, errr, oh wait.

In some EU countries and I would imagine in many other non US countries, the apps section does not even list any streaming section.
And i do not believe BMW reduced the price when omitting the HD

Normally when you start the car or select the usb stick as a source the music picks up exactly where you left off. And I mean the exact second of the song. You can also navigate, search and play music organized in playlists, folders or by tags like artist, album, genre etc. And of course you can select specific song. The overall functionality is identical to that of the hard drive and in my opinion everything what could you possibly need is there.

Yossi do you mean if I have it on a stick? I will give it a shot tomorrow when I get the chance. Having all my music ripped to digital as we speak...

Yes I mean for the usb playback. All of the functionality is there, it is exactly the same as for hard drive which is actually useless as it's only 30GB of storage space...

The ONLY USB port in my car is in the center console near the car power port.
In the armrest I only have a Type C Port.
How are you guys plugging in a USB drive into the C-Port?

Type C is also an USB port. Same functionality, different port shape. For compatibility with all computers and devices, the easiest way is to use dual standard usb stick, such as this one:

It still sucks, as the files extracted from my F30 hard drive (over 100 CD's) are in not usable format, and cannot run directly from USB, I feel lucky that my 2020 still has HD to transfer music from one car to another.
I do have USB stick with newer music, but restoring old collection would be pain in the A'.
Not cool
