In the flesh the pick up is actually quite interesting but the rear end does not impress in real life as much as it does not in the photographs. If they left the actual rear of the X7 it would be fine. But then it is a showcase for the next generation of engineering and design talent at BMW.

Let me reiterate I have not seen the M3/M4 in person but they do promise an unseen M @ the Porto M8 gathering next month.
But in relation to THE 4?

The Grille is not that dramatic. If we are being honest the car is the Vision iDynamics but when you look how the front end of the concept is really quite flat. It has been raised to meet the ubiquitous safety requirements for pedestrians etc. So it is essentially quite high as the photographs provide the evidence which is reflected in the prototypes with their raised front facias.

The render has an Alfa like quality to it which is unusual for a BMW but it's not as dramatic as the render. This is however THE 4. I cannot offer an opinion on the M3/M4.(yet) other than it gets the same face.

What I like about the new 4 is very much what I have said all along.
It takes the best of the F22 to the more flowing organic elements of THE 8 and brings forth an equally sporty looking concept.
How this new interpretation of the iconic kidney grille blends with the car is to give it far more purpose than just a smaller version of THE 8.

Although it sits front and centre. The kidney grille adds a definite sporting presence with slimmer headlights and sculpted aerodynamics with the need for over use of plastic appendages.(M Sport)

Controversial? yes, decisive?indeed. But it works perfectly. Iconic sportiness, modern interpretation and a powerful presence.
THE 4 is very much going to be a modern icon.
Scott, thank you for chiming in.

However, I am confused how or why BMW decided to use the i brand's Vision Dynamics concept car as the basis for the styling of the new 4 and hence, the upcoming M3/M4. What sense did it make to take the electric i brand styling and directly translate this to what is supposed to be BMW's bread and butter M car?

Also, there is a huge discrepancy between what you are saying the car will look like i.e. exactly like the Vision Dynamics car and what we see in this render - the VD concept has a joined grille like an outlined version of the X7 grille, but the render car has twin kidneys separated by the bumper surface just like a "classic" twin kidney setup. Even with your explanation about raising it for pedestrian safety standards, there is a link missing in your story.

Please clarify, if you would be so kind.

Thanks again!

Perfectly said!!!

That's why Porsche listen to the customer and end up bringing manual to some models back.

This is going to be big... a major shift in design, software and pretty much aesthetics!!!! Just compare e30 to e46 to e90-92 to f80 and now GM3... what a drastic change bmw is taking.. hope pricing is still maintained...

Can already picture my configuration:

Exterior: Grey
Interior: blue/black/carbon fiber
Carbon ceramic brake system (YELLOW!!!)
Competition badge...
Frosted 763m wheels

What are your imagined specs??

Yes, the X7 truck would look so much better with a rear using the existing X7s taillights or similar like this render I came across. I love this version of the pickup, minus the spoiler...

You want to know whose to blame for all of these horrible changes?

That retarded brit host from "carwow" and his pathetic youtube "drag race" results in which the F8x M3s are consistently getting tossed by AMGs/Giulas etc

RWD to AWD might be a good thing. Had both and AWD puts the power down better.
DCT to Auto: who cares. Shouldn't exist in a M car. See point 4 below
Lighter is always better
No manual is an aberration. A proper M car should have 3 pedals IMO. Yes the new autos can shift faster, but what's the point if the driver isn't involved.

I'm so scared for this car. Looking forward to the platform changes like awd... it's the styling that they are going to blow. Hope I'm wrong but this big grill phase has to die. Just not growing on me.

We all should write an email to Oliver Zipse at BMW suggesting to scrap that grill design for the G80. No ugly grill please for M3 as subject line.

Anyone clever enough to find his email address. It won't get ignored.

Yes exactly.

If they'd offer both AWD and RWD that would be fine, you would still (hopefully) get all those awesome driving dynamics from the RWD car. I hope DCT is still offered.

The exterior design is very important. The reason certain design elements are classic and carry forward (H kink in rear window, properly proportioned kidneys etc) is because people love them, they maintain lineage through the product family for generations and draw people to buy the cars. I don't know if BMW are hiring designer / creative directors with no clue of the history of the brand or if we've reached that point where designers have the attention span of gnats.

If they screw up this car I'm going to a different brand or just buying out my M2 at the end of the lease.
