Car has hung..

Updated to 07.2021.50 3.5 hours ago and its still dead. The button lights are illuminated as is the climate control but idrive and dash are just blank and car won't start. Holding the idrive power for 30sec doesn't do anything either.
Anyone know and roll back options?!

If it's really that borked maybe disconnect the battery for a bit and then reconnect.

First thing I'd check is the battery. Have you checked the voltage?

I'm leaving it over night as not faffing in the dark and cold. I imagine it will either be screwed, have a flat battery and be screwed or be fixed!
Luckily Mrs 225 car was in front on the drive or it would be trapped, gone are the days or just releasing the hand brake and pushing a dead car out of the way.

I believe the correct term is 'bricked'.

Time to call the dealer...

Bricked, borked and dead.
As suspected the battery must have died due to the cabin button lights being on and what ever else hung over night.
BMW breakdown on the way....

BMW man been and gone and its had it. Not a battery issue as he can't even connect to the ECU so looks like an ECU swap out at the dealers. Software updating at its finest.

Just waiting for the call to arrange pickup and see what hire car I'll get and if it will be a 216!....

Oh no! That must be hugely disappointing for you really feel your pain 225.
Let's hope the dealer can sort it out for you quickly and relatively easily and in the meanwhile you at least get something decent to use whilst they are working on it.

That's a pain. I had a similar issue when my 4 series got bricked after the dealer tried to update an ECU. It took a while to fix it because if the ECUs aren't talking it makes the diagnosis more difficult and also there was a bit of a wait getting a replacement ECU. They can be flashed with the right equipment but the dealers just seem to swap ECUs and send them back for someone else to do it. I hope you can get sorted quickly.

So frustrating hope you get it fixed soon. Fingers crossed for a good loaner and a quick fix.

Let's hope as said, the dealer can replace ECU and get you back mobile ASAP

Sorry to hear that, hope it all gets resolved quickly. And all the more annoying if everything was working fine before the update - if that's the case it's loads of inconvenience for additional functionality you didn't even need....

guess it depends which ECU died, if the cars electrics wont come on it's most likely the BDC or gateway modules, lets hope you don't have to wait too long !

Thanks all. Yes I can gladly say I hadn't fiddled with it yet or put it tuning box on which I am very close to doing! Only thing was plugging the exhaust flat back in.

Recovery guy is he and not happy it being stuck in park and not able to go to neutral. His "specialist equipment" he now needs consists of hammering plastic skates under each wheel so he can drag it on to the low loader...

Hopefully it's just inadequate battery power to complete the update

Is it a BMW Assist guy or a sub-contracted recovery bod? There used to be an access cover on E and F series car where you could disengage the locking pawl with a screwdriver and put it into neutral with no power. I'd have thought G series have a similar override.

Was a sub. I did ask if there was a manual way to unlock the transmission but he said there want. When he was putting it on the flatbed the front wheels did actual just go round but the parking brake locked the rears still. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and thankfully he had obviously done it before.

Anyway I now have a 4 series arriving later, don't know what spec but its from enterprise and all they can tell me is its an msport..

I just looked at this and it seems he's right. There is an emergency transmission lockout release if the car has electrical power (but just won't start) but it doesn't seem that would help in your case.

Well after hoping I'd get a shiny new 4 series so I could compare ended up with a well used 2019 boggo 420d GC.
Still a bmw I suppose at least. Looking at the sheet Enterprise are charging bmw 630 for 4 days initial rental!
Does make you realise how much the cabin has come on from f to g series in terms of layout and quality.

Just hope this never happens to me as my car's in a single garage and the way it's parked in there means it wouldn't be easy to either hammer skates under each wheel or drag it out.....

Yeah it was lucky it was parked half way down the drive and there is plenty of space in front of the house for the lorry length and the extended ramps. Its going into the workshop tomorrow morning so will see what they say then.
