In a way, yes, but there look to be fairly significant upgrades in battery tech on the horizon which should greatly improve range and charging speeds (providing you can find a fast charger!). I also think EVs only make sense on PCP or lease right now because of this, which pretty much negates the environmental benefits when you take into account the carbon cost of building the new one that one would be getting in 3-5 years. PCP as a whole probably isn’t great environmentally IMHO, getting loads more people to buy bigger cars than they otherwise would and change every 3y or so. I feel very old school keeping cars for 6-7yrs or more…

Kind of take your point, but there have also been significant advances in ICE cars over the years too. Compare a ten year old diesel, for example, to a modern one. Chalk and cheese.

If we held off buying things because something better is just around the corner we’d never buy new cars, new phones, new TVs, etc. And a significant number of people ARE buying EVs now, despite all the scare stories in the tabloid press and their respective websites. Funny how they can find so many people who regret buying an EV when everyone I knew who owns one (probably more than a dozen now) all think they are brilliant and wouldn’t go back.

But maybe that just says something about the kind of people I’m friends with.

Maybe, in that it depends on your use case: we could easily replace my wife’s car with an EV as it only gets used for local journeys and could be charged at home. Don’t think the charging infrastructure is there for longer journeys yet though.

And have you seen the residuals on Taycans? It's VERY scary. They are haemorrhaging money. Not even Porsche immune from that...

As my signature says went e36 325tds > e39 530d > e61 535d, before going midlife 4cyl farty pop bang car (which was fun) before going sensible again to g21 340i. Maybe I look at the diesels through slightly rose tinted glasses. I know they're going to be great, so there's not really a wrong answer, thoguh doing only about 10-12k a year these days in the BM......
