Below is the response I received from a "BMW customer support executive" when I enquired about Android Auto. Hope it helps someone.
Android Auto is only available for vehicles built from July 2020 – Looking at the production date of your BMW, unfortunately, your vehicle does not support Android Auto just yet. Android Auto will be available as a Remote Software Upgrade by the end of 2020, on vehicles built before July 2020 meeting the following points. Vehicle Requirements: • BMW Operating System 7.0 as part of option code SA 6U3 • Service Pack 18 (SP18) |

And honestly, that's a good thing. They'll use all the new cars for bug fixing and then send it out more broadly to the other owners. Makes sense if you wanna minimize issues and optimize customer satisfaction.
The problem here is not BMW engineering, is BMW Marketing and Sales organizations promising stuff as soon as the roadmap gets confirmed, as it happens with every other large company in the world.

FYI my Jan 2019 built 320d was in for the tie rod recall at BMW Southport last week. Got updated to 07.2020 whilst it was in there with all the new features.
So BMW can and are updating early build cars to the latest Android Auto software... |
