So don't question my setup but I have CarPlay OFF entirely, and I use:
-Waze on my iPhone screen, and
-Spotify native bmw app on the car iDrive for music

So the issue is that the waze audio notifications are not coming through the car's audio system. Yes I have waze configured to feed through blutooth. And I believe my blutooth connection is active in the car - at least that's what it says.

Someone told me they have it working like this and the waze audio interrupts briefly and then continues with music. I would settle for even that (although I was hoping for audio mixed in like my previous f30 did).

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I believe Waze notifications will only work if Carplay is active or if you're using Bluetooth as your audio source.

When Waze is active via Carplay, notifications will come through as navigation audio, allowing it to interrupt whatever audio source you're using.

When you're using Waze without Carplay, it goes through as regular Bluetooth audio, just like music streaming from your phone would. You wouldn't hear this unless Bluetooth was the active audio source.

I think you are saying that if I use native Spotify app, that essentially is "disabling blutooth" as my current audio source, and therefore blutooth voice commands from waze are not being heard. That would make sense to me. However another user says it switches to blutooth momentarily when this occurs, plays waze voice, and then switches back to Spotify.
I can't even make that work.

Right. You would have to use Bluetooth for Spotify instead of the native app.

I found this on a Google support page. This should do what you're looking for.

"Tap My Waze, then Settings
Tap Voice & sound
Under “Sound”, tap Play sound via
Tap Play as Bluetooth phone call
When Waze gives you directions or alerts, you’ll hear them through your Bluetooth device, and your phone will look like it does when you’re calling someone."

I think that's it! I will test it out thanks!

If you do not have sound in the Waze app you can try the below step:
  • Tap My Waze, then Settings.
  • Tap Voice & sound.
  • Make sure “Sounds” is turned on.

Hopefully, this might help you.
