That's correct. The "ADAPTIVE" button is the last one in the button stack below the "Engine Start/Stop" button; non-equipped models will have a blank space.

Yep, look for the adaptive button on the console.

Coming to my question: how reliable has this car been, esp. MY 2020? I will most probably be getting a CPO or after-market warranty unless there's enough evidence that these are solid cars now. For the price range I'm looking at I think I might getting a 30k to 50k miles car. What are your suggestions? What to look for when buying used? I will try to do an inspection before I buy. Any long-term maintenance issues?

Cheers!
Just to throw a wrench into the general consensus about the car. I bought a CPO MY2020 M340i with 8K miles on it. Just had its engine replaced last month at about 22K miles, under warranty. Dealership noted metal in the engine oil filter, and per BMW procedure, the dealership ordered a replacement motor. They didn't diagnose further to tell me what specifically went wrong. The car didn't show any signs of anything out of the norm prior to me getting it towed though.

Wait.... The Adaptive button is a drive mode button, not a suspension setting button. Even cars without adaptive suspension can have the adaptive drive mode (that button).

It's below the drive mode buttons in the button stack. I personally don't have it to say how it functions in correlation to the drive modes

Now that’s confusing 😞

Can others confirm?

If this is true, how else can I know if a car has it or not?
I hate to call up the dealers to find out, probably the last option.

That sucks!! Glad it’s fixed and it was covered with the CPO. I plan to get it CPO or an extended warranty from a third party.

Oh yeah. 6 week turnaround time from the dealership, which is pretty remarkable all things considered. Definitely get a warranty, just to cover yourself in case of the unfortunate.

My friend had same issue like you, and also engine replacement. We both drive pretty hard, including trackdays. Main difference is, that i change oil every 6k miles, he stick with BMW plan. His engine was gone at 25k mile, mine is still going fine at almost 44 k miles.

Nothing planned yet. Still within the warranty period, and first thing my SA asked me when they had my car was if I tuned it.

If I do tune, I'll probably go Dinan. Warranty, and car is at 8 points currently. 10 and you get a cool Dinan badge

I did the last oil change on the car using 5w30 Pennzoil Euro L. I don't remember the mileage when I did it, but it was Sept 2021. I thought I might've shafted the engine by using the weighty-er oil, but the talk around here is the B58 is built to handle that oil, as it's the recommended spec in Germany. I'm taking it in to the dealership at the end of this month to get another oil change, just for my own sanity sake on a new motor.

Any idea on the prices for extending the CPO to 100k/ 10yrs total or other options?
Any recommendations for third-party warranties?

I'd suggest someone with a G20 manual look this up and confirm. In the G26 manual which I have, the Adaptive button is listed as a driving mode and it says nothing about suspension. I have no reason to think it would be any different for a G20.
If you use your favorite search engine on this topic, you will find a number of posts including these. None of them mention suspension with Adaptive mode.

Safest way to check for adaptive suspension IMO is to do a vin check with mdecoder or vinanalytics and check for code "2VF" or "S2VF"

badaga & TheKandyman ,

I also was confused for a long time between Adaptive Suspension and Adaptive Drive Mode. Here's what I found out. These two videos are quite informative:
  • Official BMW Adaptive Drive Mode
  • Official BMW /M Adaptive Suspension

Hope this helps!

[Edited after watching the second video]

Thanks for the videos RSnic. The videos support my point about the ADAPTIVE button being a drive mode button and not necessarily a determinant that the car has adaptive suspension.

The contention is whether the presence of the "ADAPTIVE" button means the car has adaptive suspension (option 2VF). My position is NO. The ADAPTIVE button is a drive mode button and does not determine the inclusion of option 2VF on the car.

Wait....by that logic, even a car without the adaptive drive mode button, could have the adaptive suspension? Hmmm...seems odd.

Any car I've seen without the adaptive drive mode button, had the fixed suspension. That's how everyone could tell, when I ordered my car back in August 2021.

Only way to know, is if someone without the drive mode button, can go into sport individual, and see if there is the ability to change the damper settings from comfort to sport, and vice versa. If the drive mode button is what you say, then those that ordered the adaptive suspension, and don't have the drive mode button will be able to change damper settings in sport individual.

I purchased a 2020 M340 with 8k miles for $50k. Paint wasn't the best with some scratches around the trunk and the door edge, normal "accident" areas. Swirls and light scratches- looked like the previous owner liked drive thru car washes. Beware, although I have parking and executive packages, I am missing some things due to the chip shortages. Mine was built 7/2019, apparently several others I've seen on the forum have had some missing items as well (mostly things like wireless charging, steering wheel heater, blind spot light on side mirror).

As for the car itself, 2k miles in a little less than 2 months. Great car, good stock suspension setup (not adaptive suspension), and love the motor. Only complaint is that when using the phone via Bluetooth and not in CarPlay, it can sometimes feel a bit laggy. May tune it in the next couple months since Mission Performance is not too far away and coming from a tuned car, stock just won't do (for me).

I do not have adaptive suspension. I do not have the button and do not have the damper setting in sport individual. If the G20 has the adaptive button then it 100% has adaptive suspension. If the button is blank it does not have it.

There ya go. Problem solved. Thanks for posting.
If you have the adaptive drive mode button, you have the adaptive suspension. They go together.
They cannot be separated.
