Just over 2000 miles and my M340i already needs a quart of oil

I have been told that BMW does burn oil. But This seems a little soon for a new car. Can someone let me know if this is normal for BMW?.

Are you very aggressive on the accelerator? Even so, with a BMW 6 cyl you shouldn't need more than 1 qt between 10K change intervals (my last 3 BMW 6 cyl engines did not consume oil). Your car has the newly revised O1 version of the B58 so maybe things are (sadly) different?

Anyway, not a good sign. Have it checked.

Agreed. Not a particularly good sign.

I'm at 4800, always flooring it, still fine on oil. Needing it at 2k is definitely abnormal.

For the most part I was mostly city miles. I spend a lot of time in traffic.

May have started low?

On my F30 340, I have to keep a quart handy...Seems like once every 1 or 2 years, I need to top it off. Have heard the turbo is part of the reason it eats through it a bit quicker.

Maybe, but the B58 O1 variant I recall has a more advanced cooling system for the turbo. So, shouldn't be that...

Please try an iDrive oil measurement and see if you're still topped off.

That's weird I think there's something wrong, Did you follow the correct break in procedure I'm at 5K KM and I go for aggressive drives here and there and my oil has always been at full line, According to the owners manual;

Welcome to the wonderful world of german cars. BMWs are hit or miss through out the years. Some burn, don't burn, burn this much, that much. Some burn new, some burn when old. Luck of the draw. Break-in, in your case, might have something to do with it. Not much you can do but add oil and monitor it. If it bugs you, take it to the dealer.

Does this 'time in traffic' include a lot of idling? Has the car had a good break-in regime, or a lot of time in traffic?

Could be a clue to burning oil.

Glad I helped you discover what you probably didn't want to know.

Is this B58 O1 an oil burner? Or early builds of it?

mine did the exact same thing... needed a qt of oil after around 2K miles. I filled it up about a month ago and so far no issues since. But I drive it like I stole it when traffic is light and conditions (generally) safe and no I've not adhered to the break in guidelines in any capacity so not terribly surprised she needed oil so soon.

Why wouldn't you do this while knowing it's better to do so?

Except for pure M engines, I think breaking in the engine is not needed anymore with current production methods.

Just my 2 cents though.

Oh here's a feature that's standard. A place to put your quart of oil

Not that it's the same engine but a good friend had a 435i. It needed oil added within the first few thousand miles and never needed it again after that.

One quart per month is too much
