Winter Tires and TPMS

Hi guys, new to this forum.

I have a 2020 m340i that came with summer tires with these specs:
Front:225/40-R19 Runflat
Rear: 255/35-R19 Runflat

I got aftermarket Winter rims and tires that are 225/45-R18 Runflat. Everything fits really well and had no issue with installation. I also got TPMS sensors which supposedly came preprogrammed.

Problem is iDrive is not automatically sensing the tires. I went through the reset process on iDrive but it says "tires not recognized." When I view the TPMS screen, it says TPMS active and displays tire pressures and temperatures for each tire. I don't have any low tire pressure alerts showing up or error messages.

I took it to the dealership to be checked out and they claim I need official BMW TPMS sensors otherwise TPMS will not work correctly or detect a flat. This will cost almost $1000 for parts and labour.

I don't really know what the right thing to do here is...do I need the dealer sensors or is there something else that needs to be done??

Thanks

If you've confirmed that TPMS is working and no TPMS light, I'd think you're fine. If you're worried, drop the psi to like 10-15psi in one tire and see if it triggers a warning (in your driveway; don't drive around like that...)

I think that auto setup is just for idrive to display sizes and automatically set optimal psi. I don't believe any of that is really necessary for TPMS to function in warning of pressure loss. It just might not know the "optimal" psi for your winter tires. But just a guess though! I'm not an expert!

FWIW, my bmw purchased and dealer installed winter wheels & tires did have an idrive message about "Winter tires automatically detected." I have the same size summer setup as you. IDrive now shows the new winter sizes, 225/45 and 255/40 r18 (BMW set keeps it staggered).

Here is a link to illustrate why under automatic settings it may not recognize unless setup at BMW dealership:

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...rol/1VndZGlWdh

From the procedure video you can see the RDC tool is used to scan the QR Code of tire to program which I think only BMW dealership has the equipment...

If it reads pressure I'm sure you're good to go.

Thanks everyone. I'll try dropping the pressure in one tire and seeing if the system detects it. If so I should be good.

I spoke with Tire Rack today about their sensors. Their sensors are the from the same manufacturer that BMW uses for the sensors with the bmw logo ground off. He said BMW dealers even place orders for the sensors from tire rack when they are in a pinch. They guarantee them for a year.

Unfortunately, no. I dropped the pressure in one tire by about 10-12 psi but no pressure alert. I may try again and drop it more.

Considering just going without TPMS at this point as the dealer is now quoting me over $1000 CAD to get the official sensors put in. At that price it would have been cheaper to just buy the official set of tires and rims from the dealer.

Quick update. I took the car to be looked at at a local tire shop (Kal Tire) and they used their programming tool and reprogrammed the sensors in 5 minutes. Everything works as it should now and iDrive displays recommended and actual tire pressures, which change as the tires are inflated and deflated. Thanks for everyone's help. If anyone has this issue in the future, I'd recommend trying this first before going to the dealer.

Just wanted to know, what tires did you get, secondly, did the tires have the QR code on the side wall?

This is because I have the opposite situation different tires but have OEM sensors which were installed at a different tire store. They don't display the 'recommended pressure'.

Mine are not recognised but I got a flat and it detected it, I just manually set them up as 19” summers because there is no 19” winters listed in I drive.

Winter tires for M340i

Just bought the 2021 M340i xDrive. Not sure what size to go with for my winter tires. Should I stay with 19'' (225/40R19) or downsize to 18'' (225/45R18).

I live in a pretty snowy region, Tremblant, wich is 2 h drive north of Montreal, Qc.

Any suggestions?

Downsize to 18'' (225/45R18), cheaper and lots of options.

My car came with 19 staggered tires and purchased 18" winter tire set from BMW. I will go for non-RFT when time to change the tires.

Cheers!

Downsize for better traction with the tires. I mean I did a boy for my customers m340i and his sensors are picking up fine.

If sensors aren't picking up it's usually a couple of things but mainly it's because the sensors aren't programmed already. You don't know how many clients I get that buy sensors online and I install them and find out the sensors aren't programmed at all. Save the labor from installation by asking a shop if they have a TPMS tool to check if they're already programmed.

What tires did you go with your 18" wheels? Also, are they staggered as well?

I bought a set of 18 staggered and am trying to figure out the best squared set-up for winter.

Garage List
My auto shop was able to install, 225/45/18. But I noticed that the TPMS warning is always on. When I asked him he said he didn't put a new sensor.
So my question is do we have to change TPM sensor Everytime we install a new tire. This is new to me.
I've owned a 4 series in the past and never had an issue with TPM sensor.

No need to change sensors, they stay on the rims when you are simply changing the tyres. If you have bought a tyre+rim set without TPM sensors - you need to buy new set of sensors to be installed on the new rims.
