I Wonder if it will be similar to the system in my CLS which uses an electric supercharger that runs off the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Its awesome technology, gives the engine incredibly smooth output (almost NA-like), and provides plenty of power before the turbo is finished spooling, and even makes start stop so seamless I never have to turn it off. I love this tech in my CLS and would love to see BMW adopt it.

This instagram post by Jason Cammisa better explains the awesome technology
Quote:
The 3.0-liter M256 straight-six ⁣⁣⁣⁣makes 429 hp and 384 lb-ft. But forget everything you know about turbo engines: it responds, sounds, and pulls like a big NA V12. ⁣⁣⁣⁣Bonus: same MPG as the 4-cylinder E300 4Matic!
⁣Its trick? It a @borgwarnerincperformance electric supercharger called an eBooster.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣It spins from idle to 70,000 rpm in only 0.25 seconds and generates almost 7 psi of boost.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣Powered by 48V battery and takes 5000 watts (7 hp!) to spool up... but that boost gives you ~10x that power out the engine. That means you don't need to have a huge, heavy 70-hp electric motor to fill in. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣(The McLaren P1 used a 177-hp #torquefill motor. Acura NSX used 3: 36, 36, and 47 hp! That is HEAVY.)⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣The M256 also has a small electric motor — 21-hp, 184 lb-ft — and it replaces the flywheel, starter, and alternator. It also provides torque-fill while the eBooster and turbo spool.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣Once the regular turbo spools up, the eBooster and motor fade out. ⁣With so many things to coordinate, this could have been a bucky, surgy disaster. Mercedes knocked it out of the park — this has the best boost control of any engine I've ever experienced. Coming on the throttle or off the throttle (which is just as difficult to manage), it responds like an na engine. And best of all, it's a #straightsix with all the smoothness and sound. ⁣⁣⁣

Electric motor can assist the turbine to provide supplemental boost air to the engine
Electric motor (generator) can be driven by excess turbine energy from the exhaust flow

Exciting

In the video sounds like 4 cylinder. Exhaust doesn't look like it's routed from the front engine. Kidney grill shut indicates less cooling requirement, all pointing to a 4 cylinder with some hybrid tech.

It's most likely an LCI, the lights are similar to the 4 series

Something else is up, the engine if it's a P58 sounded great!

These news are a joke, it's just a twin turbo v8 with hybrid technology.

A PHEV with a 4-cyl TERS combined to ~500hp would make perfect sense! Upcoming Mercedes C AMG will presumably also get this configuration!

I think lemetier inside knowledge has debunked that theory...

It definitely sounds like a straight six in the video that I posted on the previous page (listen with headphones to get the best sound).

The info provided so far points towards a anniversary special limited edition model that has a P58 engine with MGU-H and possibly MGU-K (to use F1 lingo) and a transaxle. The CSL hommage is a pointer as to what kind of car this will be (hopefully).

Oh, and the Batmobile celebrates 50 years in 2023 btw...

This article on the CSL hommage also gives som hints as to why the mule has the air ducts in the rear side windows:
https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-re...e-2015-review/

Quote:
The engine is hooked up to 4-series coupe running gear, a stock eight-speed automatic transmission and the largest brakes Brembo could supply. There is no word on power and torque, but with two turbos and one e-boost device, 500bhp or more should be a realistic. The boost system’s twin energy reservoirs sit under eye-catching covers atop the rear axle, where lesser coupes would accommodate second-row seats.
And I also remembered this YouTube video on the CSL Hommage by Supercar blondie where the head of BMW Design said something very interesting about possible production of the car.

The whole video is worth seeing, but skip to the 13:00 mark to hear what he says about production possibilities

Apparently, it's none of the above. It's just a test mule used to test all kind of new technologies.

Also BMW denied working on any config with central mounted engine.

Exactly and that doesn't contradict anything I posted...

It's not mid engined (that was debunked early on in this thread) but it's most likely a test mule for the upcoming (hopefully) CSL Hommage drivetrain etc.

Front engine, straight six, hybrid tech, possibly transaxle.

I think Boss330 is right about 'info' but confused because May SOP suggests Spartanburg?? Wondering if equipment being tested is for more than 1 vehicle.

There's a lot of weird parts bin stuff happening, even the mirrors look like they're from an E36 M3.
Mmmm is a test mule. It will be a strange mish mash parts bin special.
