March 2020 Software Update

Hi all. Sorry if there is a thread on this already... let me know. I just got my software upgrade on my M430. For months the dealership said they wouldn't do it unless BMW ordered it to solve something but they relented after enough complaints about the connected app not working (and I was wondering of the app had anything to do with the crazy problem of my car starting itself on a few occasions as I walked away from it after parking)... and my sales rep says the update solved his connected drive app problems. Unfortunately the app doesn't work at all now... even after deleting and loading again... I'll have to figure that out.

But here is the question. Has anyone noted any new features the updates provide? I was expecting the update from last November but the car says it was new last month. The only thing I've noticed so far is I can set the steering wheel to heat automatically at whatever temperature I set it at. Previously it only turned on the heated seats but not the steering wheel.

So if anyone has had the November or March update and knows of any new features... I'd appreciate knowing. Thanks!

Tesla does updates to add features; BMW does it to fix features but very rarely, if ever, to add features.

Oh OK. When I saw that I could set my steering wheel to heat automatically now I wondered if there was anything else new. Thanks.

From a software engineering standpoint, this is actually a much safer strategy. Adding new features comes at the cost of testing the new feature + regression testing all the existing stuff, and then they have to deal with folks doing custom coding (creating edge cases that the best software test strategies on the planet aren't capable of handling). The number of regression test possibilities becomes unmanageable, and then you have the cost and lost of hearts and minds as some customers end up saying "but I LIKED the way it worked before.. bring the old way of doing things BACK!".

All of this testing and hassle for a product that folks' lives depend on. Thank god I'm not in charge of that, but if I were, I'd do it the BMW way, not the Tesla way.

It's pretty sad and quite frustrating, The connecteddrive and iDrive in general has been nothing but a mess, full of glitches and inconsistencies, you can't rely on it what's so ever.. yet they also can't get OTA updates working... makes me so mad

I have an iPhone 11 Pro and apparently there were issues with that phone connecting to the app.

When you mentioned the March 2020 update and took it to the dealer and had an open ticket with BMW Corporate and they were able to finally fix the issues.

So now it's all up and running.

+1 to this....

Looks like someone works in software development or product management.

It think i's even worse than you allude to. Tesla does it that way because they're so far behind schedule. Instead of including all features they promise/intend, they release it with known bugs or features disabled then add them later on while the cars are in customers' hands.

I'm on version 7/2019.55 and my car was delivered early November.

So far I haven't had any major issues so I really don't want to rock the boat with convincing the dealer to do an update and cause potential issues.

Only thing I'm missing is Spotify which I really would like. I already coded auto heated steering wheel and my car came from the factory with the assisted driving view. The app so far has been pretty decent. I use it to start the car all the time and I've only had it not work a handful of times. The only other problem with the app is that on my previous Samsung S10+ I was able to use it as a digital key, however with my newer S20 Ultra the digital key is not supported apparently.

I'm holding out for the 7/2020 version where hopefully we will get Android Auto.

I'm not sure BMW promised Android Auto for cars produced before 7/2020, does anybody know of a clear quote about that from them?

BMW has confirmed that cars with iDrive 7.0 and apple carplay active (I think it's called connected services now) will get the OTA update

There’s a video on YouTube that shows you how to add Spotify without updating. Takes 30 seconds!

If it's the one involving updating the apps and resetting, I tried a bunch and I think the consensus was you needed at least 11/2019 for that to work.

Hi,

I have just had my G20 320D updated with software 03 / 2020.40, and now I see that my cornering lights are always on when headlights low beam are on. I have the headlights with extended features (not laser and not the standard LED).

Anyone noticed same issue?

Please check the iDrive, Phone.... sub-forum as there is a long thread on Software Updates -- quite informative

Hope that helps!
