idrive update time at dealer

Since purchasing my 23 m340i 2 months ago, I have had non stop issues with gps drift when using navigation through Apple CarPlay. I spoke with a BMW ‘Genius’ today who informed me there is a new update to 07/2023 that will fix the issue, but they aren’t able to push it immediately through remote update. I am currently on 03/2023.35. First dealer I called said it would take 6-8 hours to update the car and that I would have to leave the car overnight. This seems absolutely insane for just a software update. Second dealer said it would take 1-1.5 hours and I can wait for it.

Has anyone ever heard of a dealer SW update taking 6-8 hrs? That can’t possibly be true right?

Is anyone running 07/2023 that can confirm it fixes the gps drift problems in Apple CarPlay?

I have updated mine to dealership here in NL and it took about 1-2h to do it
Was not neccesary to leave it over the night or stuff loke that, is just a software update...
Also update it to latest 7/2023 but I'm not sure about the fix of the problem mentioned as I am new owner and not sure about the old behavior
Also, I paid 230€ for update (since is not in waranty anymore)

230EUR?!

Ouch. I'm still on 7/2021 in my 2019 330i.

Kinda crazy that you have to pay when you've already paid for Connected Drive and it won't do it OTA anymore.

Cool, appreciate your feedback. 1-2 hours seems much more reasonable. Dealer has already confirmed mine will be covered under warranty, but did mention they bill to the warranty for $300 lol

Software updates vary car to car. Some cars will take the update in an hour, others will take 4 hours.

Mine is a G20 330E 2019 iDrive 7 and they said that together with iDrive they updated also all the modules of the care as it is "better"...
So yeah, quite expensive, I was surprised as well about the price but since I was there and I had an old version (smth from 2021) I just decided to go with the update

Had a 540 and when the firmware was updated I was told it was about 2 hours. Varies based upon equipment ie for example if you have adaptive dampers, they have to do some calibration with it

Sounds like they just want it for the day so they can work on it in parallel with other jobs

I do all of my own updates with ISTA and I've never had one take more than an hour ever, most are half that. All of the vehicles have been highly optioned as well so max number of ECU's sort of thing.

I've had to have a couple of OTA updates that wouldn't install. Each time, took it to dealer & had to leave it overnight-- their shop procedures manual require the car be kept overnight as a precaution just in case -- fortunately, dealer gave me a loaner

Sorry

I made an appointment for Friday morning at the dealer that said 1-1.5 hours. I guess I’ll see how it goes lol. Hopefully it actually resolves the CarPlay issues at least

Went in for the update today. Took about 2 hours to update to 07/2023.53.

GPS drift issue seems to be fixed, but too early to tell as it was somewhat intermittent. If it doesn’t happen for a week or 2 I’ll consider it fixed.

Got an interesting note on my work order as well. “Customer is using a 3rd party app to input address.” I assume this is referring to BimmerCode. Does BMW really care about people using BimmerCode?

I assume the third party app is Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (vs BMW Nav). BimmerCode doesn’t feed any address info to the GPS.
