I will try next to remove the shutters motor and or remove the arms so it won't move,

Has anyone done it successfully?
Can you please tell me how to unplug them while they are open. I’m willing to do this even with the CEL being turned on. Please help!!

You have to remove that black plastic thing under the hood, above the grill, making access to the motor possible. Feel around there (near the middle of the grill) and you'll find the connector that you need to unplug.
With the engine on and AC max cool activated, the flaps open. It might take a minute or so but you have to keep looking till it opens. Once it opens, unplug the connector and it'll stay open. You'll have to wrap the connector on the plug in tape or something to prevent dirt and water getting into it.
Your CEL will be on because of this, making you lost the ability to remote start your vehicle.

Yea. Tune and unlock the car via bm3 or MHD and there is an option for “sport cooling” where the flaps are always open. They do close when the car is turned off.

Anyone ever solve this? Would be nice just to have the flaps open temporarily with the car off for detailing purposes. Not only was the E39 beautiful, it was also MUCH easier to keep clean lol…

Using esys. Look for either akks or lks and you will find the options to disable it

So this weekend a car ahead of me ran over some 18 wheeler tire and it hit my lower grille. Cracked it. But it dislodged 1 of the lower active cooling vents. They still work. I disconnected the top one thinking it was the issue. I have a CEL and 2 codes for each vent. Related to min/max position. Dealer quoted me 2800 to fix. 300
In parts. Would ITSA+ be able to do the adaptation to clear the CEL once I fix the bottom flap ?

I think if you fixed or replaced the damaged shutters (bumper cover removal is absolutely necessary for lower shutters), then cleared the codes on ISTA+ and run the service function, that might be enough. I dont recall seeing an adaptation for the shutters just the service function.

Thanks. I use the term adaption from my VW/Audi days. Anytime anything that moves with a servo it seems you gotta “adapt” it or teach it what min/max is. Sounds like in BMW land it’s service function? I assume when you do that it moves the motor the full range of motion and then it clears the error ?

I think you just need to clear the codes after installing the new shutters. The service function will just verify the function of the shutters. I do not think the new shutters "have to be learned in" as it simply opens and closes- there is no inbetween.

awesome, thanks! I am trying to get into another lease anyway, so lets see if the dealer really wants to charge me $2800 or I will just get ITSA and do it myself.

Any luck on this? Currently dealing with the lower activeblinds on my 330i.

Top piece popped out of place. I was able to access the blinds from under the car by removing the splash shield and reconnected the top blind to the mechanism. It all worked fine after clearing codes and doing a test open/close with ISTA. However took a drive today andCEL came back on with the same code (lower blind upper limit not detected) or something like that and now they’re permanently open!
