Ouch, I guess that confirms the M340i is getting the fake bumper exhaust tips. Still hoping there's some type of m performance diffuser/tips to fix that atrocity but that's overly wishful thinking at this point. Why does the 330i get real tips and the M340i doesn't?

Because m340 has to compete with MB with equally fake square exhaust tips

These look to be the same style that's on the X3 M40i. If you check around their forums some of them were able add quad tips in.

Doesn't really bother me but adding quad tips will make the rear look really aggressive. Shouldn't be too hard replacing the tips or if anything an aftermarket exhaust will probably have nicer tips.

They're pretty similar, but it looks like from the photo above that they're part of the bumper as opposed to the M40i's which are not:

Could be worse. Look at Audi.

Take a close look at their exhausts. They don't even have ports they are completely fake.

I saw one in person, they are not fake. They are very similar to the ones on my X3 M40I but molded into the bumper as they are on X5.

I'm pretty sure SCOTT26 is talking about Audi's fake exhausts.

Is that any worse than fake exhaust sound through the speakers?

It's called "tip-in-facia" in the industry.

Isn't most music processed in the studio these days (even live performances get effects added)?! Lip-syncing is fake, but singing through a microphone is very real, unless one relies heavily on auto-tuning.

There's nothing fake about the trapezoid exhaust tips, because they not only vent the exhaust, but are also physically connected. IMO as long as most of the exhaust gas exits through the tips, they are real; whether the tips are welded to the pipe vs the rear bumper is irrelevant. I do detest the fake openings on some Audi's and Acura's.
