M340i moonroof noise
Hi everyone,
5 months of owning my M340i (first-time BMW owner) and I love it! I don't think I can go back to owning any other car... Here's the problem: Last week my moonroof has started to make a noise like clicking or some part of it moving. It happens when I hit a road bump (even a small one) and it comes from the driver's side of the moonroof. Closing the cover does not help so it must be the glass itself. Maybe the seal has broken-in and its making this noise?? It has been extra cold in the northeast recently so temperature might have something to do with it. I know people have had problems with speaker rattling and trunk noises. I can confirm the speaker vibrations and will probably try to fix it with felt tape. Any idea how to fix the moon-roof issue? Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thank you in advance! |

Try to pull the black plastic surround on the upper interior lights out a bit. I noticed this noise too but I feel like it comes from there and not the sunroof.

I had the same problem in my 2018 X3 and they have the exact same lights dome. This thing cracks en pops like hell. Last week i tried to pull it out to see if i could solve this problem. After releasing the 2 screws i tried pulling it off with no succes. I felt if i would apply more force than i did i would start braking things so i gave up. Luckily though during the reinstalation of the parts that i took out already in noticed that when i pushed the dome after my pulling efforts it had become much more quiet. The cracking sounds have been reduced with about 90%. When driving it not makes any more annoying sounds

So here is some further clarification of the noise:
Appears to go away when the sunroof is rolled back. Also goes away if I put outward/upward force on the sunroof. Headliner/console area doesn't appear to change anything with pressure or whatnot. |

Test drove a 330e last week and it creaked constantly as well. Only with the shade open though (roof itself was closed). And not noticeable with the radio on. Couldn't reproduce by pressing on the headliner when standing still. Could be a part close to it like the dome. But still though.

My sunroof makes so many creaks and rattles unless I tilt it up... I want to take it to the dealer but I'm worried they will say they can't do anything

Hi tturbolife - my 5-series moonroof would creak over some roads but not on others, and I kept going back to my dealership with the problem. Lubricating the seals didn't work so after two replaced new seals and a new moon roof glass installed from a different new car seems to have done the trick (at least for two weeks or so).

I have 2 different noises - a rattle which goes away when the moonroof is tilted up and a creaking sound which does not.
Both go away with the roof fully open. The creaking happens only when the car flexes on major depressions in the road, while the rattle is almost constant even on very minor imperfections. |

Take it to the dealer and make a pest of yourself until they sort it. There is no excuse for it being noisy. As an aside the sunroof in my G20 is fine...but as I type I have realised I haven't opened it since I collected the car on Xmas Eve as I don't want to get soaked by the rain here in the UK |

Thanks! I agree there is no excuse for it to make that noise! I’ll Make sure they fix it. On a side note, it only started making that noise 2-3 months after I got mine. |

I've had mine into the dealer three times for this issue. No joy. They keep lubing but the noise persists. I find myself avoiding the car which sucks as it wasn't cheap. I'm going to try again at the dealer when it warms up a bit.
