Mine will reach 3yr age in July. Seems like a costly period about to start... I'm thinking the following costs are on the horizon now:

1- Brake fluid change (£150 from Sytner)
2- MOT £55
3- Connected Drive as above £89
4- Maps update £79
5- End of warranty check, from older threads this no longer applies / is available?
6- Warranty extension, £?

And on top I wanted to have an interim oil service, which again seems to be ~£350 from Sytner.
I'm in exactly the same boat. Car 3 years old in June. Just had a major service so that expense has now gone. Connected drive I will pay for as I also understand it would be needed for the adaptive driving mode as that utilises sat nav data so would also need the maps updates. End of warranty checks are no longer and have been cancelled by BMW and the dealers. Vertu in Sunderland don't offer it and neither do Lloyds of Newcastle so assume it's a full no-no. Warranty extension - daren't even think about what that would cost.

My attitude with the maps update is to alternate it: buy it for a year and then leave it a year. I do use the BMW nav but don't think there will be that many changes to the roads in a year and I can just muddle through if I do find myself off course.

Realised that my services expired a few weeks ago (as half the app icons disappeared)
I only really used the inbuilt satnav because of the enhanced directions on the hud and dash - I will give Apple Maps a go as that has at least some support for the HUD.

Map Updates every second year makes sense to me, but I will end up paying for Connected Booster, mainly because I HATE using a mobile phone for anything, so if I can aviod using the bloody thing, and still have functionality in the car, that's the option I'll choose.

Mine expired recently. The only difference to me is that I’ve lost real time traffic information but I’ve switched over to Apple Maps now.

I have a service plan and I saw that it includes 1 map update which I’ll presumably get when it goes in for its next service (January next year).

Do other car brands also have "options by annual subscription" nowadays?

Why would you expect free map updates and connected services for life? I don't think it's unreasonable that accessing connected services has a small annual fee.

It used to be much more expensive for much less functionality.

Yes, most manufacturers offer subscription services these days. Some quick Googling gave me the below examples:
https://www.mercedes-benz.co.uk/pass...al-extras.html
https://www.ford.co.uk/owner/subscriptions
