Spare tire ?
Hi everyone. I recently purchased a 2024 M340i. I was able to close a deal on a car that was nearly completely like I would have specified it myself.
I have the m798 staggered fitment with performance run flat tires. Out of curiosity, I was wondering where a spare tire would fit. Especially as a spare is a factory option.(I realize this is not an option with the 19” wheels). Please see the picture I took from my trunk space under the floor. Does the car with spare have a different trunk space?

The spare tire and jack used to be a relatively cheap option (maybe $250), but I only ever saw one 340i with it on the lot. You lose a lot of trunk space, but apparently still have enough height to fit most carry-on bags.
If you ordered the high performance tire and cooling package it came with the BMW mobility kit. Just a small compressor and tire slime. That works okay for small punctures, but actual blowouts (I’ve had several) mean you have to hope the runflat is still intact enough to drive on and get off the road. |

Guessing this will get someone fired up.
Assuming the tires are in good condition I don't really see a need for a spare - even with non-runflats. Blowouts and flats are such a rare event with modern tires I'll just deal with it when it happens by calling a tow truck or whatever. I've driven a lot of miles in my life and have had exactly one blowout on the highway, and can't even remember the last time I had a flat tire. |

Space saver spare will significantly decrease your trunk volume. Got it bc knew winter tires would be non run flat but feel like it made the trunk about half as deep so kinda annoying, not sure I would spec again.

I am in Australia and have PS4S* non RF.
When I drive in rural areas, there can be times ypu don't see another car for hours and cell reception, forget about it. So when I am on those roads I do carry a spare. But because it's so rare I simply place the tire in the trunk and ratchet tie down in place. I literally just use the spare wheel off my Alfa159 which is a 19" rim and I placed a tire on it that is exactly the same diameter as my staggered fitment. So I can place the tire on any corner and I can drive it for hundreds of miles to get me home without damaging the transfer case. Otherwise, when on "normal", populated roads, no spare just the factory supplied repair kit/compressor, but I have added a tire puncture repair kit and a jack etc. Fits in the side compartment in the trunk. Of course I also have BMW Roadside, so I can just get it towed home. |

Not entirely clear from this picture to me. Does the entire floor get raised? Like in the 330e models (for the battery, as that car also doesn’t come with a spare).

I have the spare tire kit in my car. You do lose a significant amount of trunk space. But it wasn’t a big deal for me. To each their own though.
The floor is different between the two options.

When I configured my X3M40i I was aware of the raised floor in that one (I have rft’s so no spare in that one either). In my X3 I can however clearly see where the spare would go under the floor. But in the M340i I don’t even see where it would fit (if I had ordered with spare). I do have a 19” modern spare I take with me on long road trips either on my Mercedes GLC or on my X3. Does anyone know whether the wheel would also fit on my M340i? (I mean, I can try it out myself if no one has done it before).

If you're ordering a car, it's worth it to spec the option as it's only $250, and you can always buy the standard trunk floor piece if you want to convert to a "normal" trunk volume afterwards. That part is $142 plus shipping. Otherwise, going the other way and buying the space saver spare/jack parts along with the trunk floor pieces is way over $1k in parts cost.
It definitely takes up trunk room, but you can easily remove it in less than a minute and actually just use the trunk floor that comes with the space saver option if you don't mind a bit uncovered up near the seat backs.

This is what I ordered for my M340i for long trips. I have the PS4's non run flats.
I just throw it in the trunk. https://ez-sparewheel.com/products/2...vehicles-25076

I consider using run-flats or non-RF with a compressor and puncture fluid to be the same thing. Both will get you out of the same trouble, but a more severe tire issue and you are pretty much toast regardless.
So the spare tire becomes helpful in certain situations, even with RF's, as I mentioned previously. So that's why I occasionally carry a proper spare. Otherwise in a populated area with Roadside assist, no real need for a spare. |

I had imagined that there would be some kind of recessed area for the spare. Now I understand that the only difference is that there are tie downs and a raised floor. How much does the floor get raised approximately? Something like 5 or 6 inches?

Here are some pictures of my M340i with the spare option that should help:

I have staggered setup non-RFT and yes it can be optioned with the space saver. I got this option because for the amount it was a no-brainer as it comes with all the kits including the spare tire.
I ordered the non-space saver trunk liner even before my car arrived. I had the dealer swap the space saver out so now the spare tire along with the kit/tools seat in my garage. I have a mobility kit but when going on long road trips, I bring the tire with me. |

I too have long carried a jack kit (it's a BMW bag with jack and lug wrench) along with a plug kit inside it. Ever since over 20 years ago when I bought an E39 M5 which was my first experience with an "M mobility kit", I've been doing this in all our cars. I've only had to plug three tires over the past 20+ years, but each time it was so nice to plug and go as opposed to either dealing with the nasty slime sealant (which often apparently fails to seal plus makes a supreme mess inside the wheel) or waiting for a tow.

My car didn't come optioned with the spare - I bought it off a forum member a while back. Only thing I needed to source was the threaded inserts to screw in the tie downs.
