Software Update weirdness - alarm go off

This was weird. Downloaded 2023.11 update for my 2019 330i. Got message telling me that I would be notified when ready to install. Like two months ago.

Finally got a 'start installation' message. Parked the car, etc. Started the upgrade. After less than a minute, it stopped and the BMW car alarm went off. Flashing lights, horn. Could not stop it.

After a few embarrassing minuted trying everything, I got out of the car a pushed the 'unlock' button on the remote a couple of times. That seemed to do it.

Makes me scared to even try the update again. God knows what it will break.

Why is the process such a mess? A $50 burner phone is more elegant to update than the 'Ultimate Driving Machine'. Who writes their shit software?
