G20 330e etc Adaptive Lights

I couldn't get the laser lights (went for other toys), and have a question on the Standard LED Adaptive Lights... (on 330e/330i/320D etc.)

I know they curve around corners as you steer, but do they have any other clever tricks under their sleeves? Like Selective Beam etc.?

Youtube videos are rubbish or out of date or show Laser ones only

I know they have auto ride height adjustment, and High Beam Assist can be added for a £160 fee since Jun 2020 builds

I have a G30 and the lights are great, with High Beam Assist, but nothing else clever (apart from adjusting height up/down automatically based on vehicle dive/towing etc.)

Adaptive lights on my F31 were the best thing about the car with the “car in a box” trick when following traffic but I doubt the standard adaptive on the G20 are anything like that. Just vaguely point around corners I think.

And don’t get me started that HBA is another £160 when all the requisite hardware already exists

Same functions as the lights that were available when I ordered my G30, they were called adaptive too, and had the selective beam etc...but I went for the basic ones, and even they are v bright, but no bending round corners etc.

So that's why I was wondering if the G20 Adaptive had similar tricks... seems not

I’m not sure as I don’t have my car yet. If the HBA gives full adaptive functionality with selective beam (aka variable light distribution) etc I’ll definitely subscribe but if simply dips beam if something comes towards you then meh...

No, HBA I have today and know what that does, basically let's you go on high beam and dips when it sees oncoming lights, tail lights and in urban areas with streetlights

Adaptive is separate functionality... it just seems Adaptive is different model to model

Yes I know but HBA is stand-alone as you have but is also deeply integrated into the full adaptive system. My F10 had basic dip function as you described but on the F31 it was amazing when integrated with variable light distribution. Which version it is on the G20/1 I don’t know but I’m aware there are two types.

This is from my post in the other thread:
BMW have created a lot of confusion with the G20 headlights.

Standard adaptive LED can swivel round corners etc. but they don't do Selective Beam (where parts of other drivers' cars are blanked out depending on road conditions). Nor do they do auto High Beam unless a fee is paid for post July 2020 models.

Visibility package for £1500 in the UK gives you:
Full Adaptive LED with BMW Selective Beam
High Beam Assistant
Laser module that comes on above certain speeds to add more firepower to the adaptive LED high beam.

That’s as I suspected. It’s a bit of a stretch to call them adaptive really and £160 just to switch high beam on or off is a bit of a joke too. Just call them “headlights” and drop the adaptive.

I came from a Volvo XC60 with adaptive lights, I’d say the BMW lights are excellent, I’d love to have had the funky laser lights but they are hideously expensive and aren’t as good as the offerings from the competition.

Totally agree.... and terminology not consistent across models is seems

Fortunately 95% of my driving is at daytime/light, so it's only the rare holidays on country roads or family visits (whatever that is nowadays!) up to the Midlands... I think I will survive

Thanks, confirms my suspicions, no such thing as a free lunch

To reiterate though, the full set up I had on the F31 was something to behold. Shame about the rest of it.

Similarly my driving profile has now changed such that night driving in the boonies is rare and so there are better things to spend money on. The standard LED lights are still very good and a world away from when halogen was standard. That was the main reason for full visibility pack on the F31 - it would have had Mr Kipling halogens otherwise.

I hear you, had Halogens on my F10 (ordered just before Xenon was free!) And they were appalling, dangerous... mildly better with aftermarket bulbs I purchased

That’s why I always had the visibility pack in the past plus halogens look shite.
