Cool. But BMW thinking they're even average at manuals is kind of funny. Porsche, Honda, Mazda and sadly, Ferrari, all do/did it wildly better.

If the manual dies, it should probably go out in a sports car, not a large, heavy sporty coupe.

Losing the manual transmission for good is definitely going to be a sad day in car production. But I'm going to miss the inline-six engine with a nice sounding m performance exhaust a lot more when we will all have to switch over to electric cars..

It does not matter, people will not buy the manual...

Food for thought, there are 82 M3s (F80s) for sale, only 2 of them are manual.

There are 179 M4s for sale ATM, 13 of them are manual.

Manual is dying? people are not buying, especially when the autos are delivering so much more...."performance" when compared.^

Personally, as much as i love manuals....i think they suit the last get M cars much better (the NA engines), something about shifting at 8K+ rpms yourself is much more satisfying, it suited the car. New gen....manuals feel and even sound a bit off.

...all of which just underlines my purchase of a 2018 340 ZHP as the last new BMW I'll buy. Mind you, it's SO good I suspect I'll keep it until they come for my keys!

I wouldn't worry about that. Get him a real M3 when he's older like an e36, e46, or e92. He'll be the talk of his friends to have the last hydraulic steering and NA motor masterpiece.

Very valid points and as much as our hearts want to disagree these are great points. Half of the fun of an MT is REVVING out THEN changing gears. That is diminished with turbo engines, especially the F80 M3/M4 that has SO much power low down you don't need to go past 4k RPM

A manual is still standard equipment on the M2, M3 and M4 while the M5 is auto only now.

Lol.... if you can find one ...100 made.

If it's an E90 maybe not ... but the 340 is really sweet and 355 horse is plenty...

Not sure I understand.

If you have 82 M3s and only 2 are manuals, wouldn't it stand to reason that the manuals have nearly all been claimed and the DCT remains by a 40/1 ratio?

It's easier for a dealer to order a DCT, so they do. We still know a considerable amount of people (more than the 40/1 ratio above) will special order their BMW with a manual because it's the single most important option on their car.

That's true for me at least...

I don't get all the goo ga at the auto companies. Rather than selling the automatic as the more expensive option due to it better technical performance, just sell the manual as the higher cost special order due to its class and enthusiast community. For some time already, it's no longer about absolute top performance but more about personality. We all want to drive to work in f1 cars every day? I guess not.

40% of M3's in the US are manual. Maybe there are so few available because the manual drivers bought them.

I was thinking the same thing as I read the quote. I would believe the M2 would be the last car to keep the manual as the M3/4 get bigger and have more power or AWD.

By the time his son is old enough to drive, hate to say it but people his age won't give a shit about any of that. I'm 22 and while there are the people that are obsessed with their manual transmissions, they almost all drive older, slow, non-performance vehicles that are constantly broken down and or having issues. There's maybe 1-2 guys I'm friends with that I could believe would actually not buy an automatic ever.

I personally don't find a manual transmission to even be that much more engaging, granted the only MT vehicle I've driven is a pretty shitty example of an E39 528i. Sure it was neat, but anytime I've driven spiritedly, it's not like shifting happens that much anyway. My friends that do autox stick to one, maybe 2 gears the entire race. Drag racing you row through gears for about 10 seconds. Drifting is also pretty much stuck in 2nd/3rd for most cars.

The truth is, most MT driving is done on regular roads where 99.9% of people don't care whatsoever about being "engaged" with their vehicle, and while I see why so many people love their MT vehicles, it doesn't change the fact that nearly everyone I go to school with that are in the school car club (some of whom made claims that they will always drive manuals) has bought cheap dailies (a few hundred dollar 80s/90s cars) and they are ALL automatics.

tl;dr very few people young will care about hydraulic steering, high revving NA motors and manual transmissions in 16 years. Maybe have an appreciation for them but that's about it (like young adults right now in regard to classic American Muscle).
