So... Is this why the 8-er coupe and vert were discontinued? The dimensions are very similar, too similar, especially when you're comparing a 4-series to an 8-series. I think I remember a comment that stated the two were so similar that the large grille was on purpose in order to differentiate it.

Let's be clear about this so there isn't false info floating around - the 8er Coupé and Cabriolet are still being produced, it's the M8 Coupé and Cabriolet that are being discontinued for at least MY21.

So for about 40% less money, you can buy a similar sized and styled BMW sports coupe, with a look-alike, although less luxurious, interior; and, with a 6 instead of an 8, but electronically they both top out at the same speed... Grill? What grill? I didn’t see any grill.

I propose we all start a petition for our respective states to do away with front license plate requirements. They're only used for ticketing anyway - seriously, about 80% of front plate requirements are simply due to plate readers having trouble with angles / lighting / dirt / etc on about 20% of rear plates. My registration fees are already like $500 - I'd gladly make it $520 for no front plate requirement. And hell then they'd save money on not having to manufacture / ship 2 plates.

Nice pics and definitely getting used to the new look of the 4er. Did you take any video of these that you can post on your YT channel?
BTW - I ran these number plates through the DVLA road tax/mot checker; they are both road taxed (makes sense as they are registered), the blue one is a diesel (obvs the grey one is petrol as shown by the badge) and the last registration document update is shown as 16 June 2020, so they have been in the country a little while and I'm guessing they're early cars intended for press reviews/tests. I believe the public availability in the UK is set for October, so hoping might be able to get sight of these at dealership previews in September. I'm quite close to BMW UK HQ, do they allow visitors/general public in? |

I heard this blamed in a video review I watched of the new Audi A4/S4 recently, where they basically said certain features were only available if you paid to go up to the next trim level (for example in the UK this might mean the new 'Vorsprung' trim versus R-Line or whatever) due to WLTP rules. I've noticed this recently in the option packs they let you configure on the UK website; you can have this one feature only if you order 'X' option pack at £600/£1500/£2000 - even though you might not want the other 'y' number of features in that pack. The other factor of course is build costs/profit margin; the more individual options you offer, the more it costs you to manage the supply chain and physically build each variation - whereas if you limit the options it makes it easier to predict demand and 'standardise' the build process to larger subsets of modules. Looking at some of the latest BMW Individual program documents, if you get deep into the options it a) costs a fortune and b) delays your car by potentially 10's of weeks/months - as it looks like they pull it off the line and use outside contractors for finishing instead of trying to do it within the regular facilities. |
