BMW rolls out paid subscription model for Apple CarPlay in the UK just like in the US

Looks like for all iDrive 7.0 owners will have to pay for Apple CarPlay prep and an annual subscription of £85. Alternatively, £255 for three years or £295 for a lifetime subscription. More ways of making money...

I have no words. That is utter shit. The fact that it is free and standard in a freaking Hyundai and Kia, but is now going to be a monthly bill in a luxury car just stinks to high heaven.

BMW better sort their house out or they are seriously going to start losing customers.

Complete utter fucking nonsense from BMW. The 2019 Ford Fusion fleet car I drive for work came with it as standard equipment. Shame on you BMW.

This is one of the stupidest things bmw has done. No one in the industry is following suit. Pure customer satisfaction issue for pennies.

Plus even worse because the car needs to communicate with bmw servers to "verify" every time you start the car... if they have server issues your CarPlay won't work

I strongly dislike this subscription model thang. Sure hope BMW offers the US a lifetime option. I'd rather experience the pain once and be done instead of being aggravated every year over it.

Why is everyone complaining. You can get it lifetime. So basically it's just like if you would option out your car...

Unless the lifetime thing is only in the UK.

carplay is standard on economy cars, why should it be an extra fee on a "premium" manufacturer?

I don't know but a rear view camera wasn't even standard before and was an option part of a package.

I'm just happy that it's not a subscription only and you can at least get the full option.

Guessing the lifetime plan is not valid if you switch into another BMW ?

We're not talking about options available years ago, glad you are happy handing out money for a standard function on cars that cost a quarter of BMW's prices.

You would think this would violate at least the spirit of any license agreement that Apple has with OEM's. I'm surprised they don't have a problem with their IP being resold or upcharged. The fine print/legalese probably says you're paying for the hardware interface and not Carplay.

It would be one thing (maybe) if BMW actually contributed anything of worth. The software is on your iphone and really BMW is only there as an interface. It's not worth $25 much less a recurring fee per year.

Also what happens when the car's onboard communications get phased out of service? For example, 2013 cars and older used an older communication system (2g) and no longer have a way of communicating to the servers. Same thing will happen to 3G and 4G at some point, so lifetime really isn't even lifetime.

That you have a point sir.

I've got my 335is last year and I was so hyped to be able to use SOS and traffic on nav features only to realise my car is 2g or 1g and isn't use anymore by cell towers. Shit sucks.

They do now. It's a $300 for 240 month (20 years) subscription. That's pretty much lifetime.
