Returning a leased car with non-oem tires?

My car came with the horrible Pirelli runflats that are half worn at 10k miles. I don't want to put the same tire back on b.c then i'll have to replace them again at 40k before turning my lease in.

Does BMW require the same tires to be on the car when the lease is turned in? Does anyone know what the lease contract says or had any experience with this ?

I’ve seen reports of people saying they were allowed to return the car with any brand tyres similar in specification to the ones that came with the car, AND, others saying they had to return the car with BMW specific RFTs (those tyres have a star on it) and were dinged for returning it without them. My guess would be to ask the dealer you plan on returning it to and, if possible, get it in writing just to make your end safe? Or you could swap your tyres out now with the remaining tread, get new tyres and enjoy those and then return the car with the RFTs you took out?

Just take your tires off and keep them for lease return.

Thanks guys, I think this sounds like a good option. I will change out the runflats at about 15k so there’s enough tread for lease turn in and get new tires.

Now for the bigger question- which tires to get ??? Getting another set of runflats prob defeats the purpose so I’m thinking an all season performance tire. Any recommendations ? I will need the tire to last at least 30k miles. Maybe get the same pirelli in non runflat form ? Any experience with the Michelin pilot sport all/seasons ? Will they last 30k?

I always get used RTF and return with that. Many times with different brands and never had any issues.

Don’t get the Pirelli P7 non RFTs. I had them on my A4 and they were HORRIBLE. They get flat spots if you leave it parked for more than a day in the garage. Poor grip. I absolutely hated them.

Michelin PS3s are good tyres. A wee bit expensive but I’ve only read good things about them. A few friends have it on the A4 B9# and they love it. I don’t have any experience with these tyres though.

Is it true that the Michelin PS4's are only good for 10-15k miles? Seen a few ppl mention that lately. Unless I'm mixing them up with the sport cup 2's?

PS3 and 4 are good tyres. And yes. Around 15k is what a lot of people seem to be getting. I have a friend who’s at 30k kms on PS4s but he says he’ll probably have to change it out in a few thousand kms.
For daily driving, the PS3 is good enough. A set of PS4s probably will cost around $100 more. If one can spare that extra $100, then the PS4 is a slightly better option.

If you're still searching for a good long lasting Tyre, try conti dws06..it has excellent ratings, softer sidewall, high UTQG rating and lasts at least 25-30k miles ..

I have returned multiple BMW leased cars and they never cared what tires were on there as long as it was the OEM size and that the rear pair was the same brand/model and front pair were same brand/model.

Yeah, I spoke to the dealer and they said as long as it's the same size and has the star logo on the tire its fine. Also, if its run-flat, the tire you buy also has to be run flat. However, knowing how dealers are, I would suggest writing an email and get their reply so you have it as evidence that THEY said it was ok.

+1 for Michelin super sport 4s. They'll last longer than RFTs all day long. Great tyre.

Also because the BMW press cars run these and they are a very high quality tyre you shouldn't have any issues if you return the car with these on. BMW star as well.

On my previous M140i which was rear drive only, no LSD so she lit up the rears all the time, the rears lasted 12k miles to 3mm but the fronts still had 5mm on them. And they came stock.

I expect on my M340i to get closer to 20k all round.

My RFTs rears are down to 3mm already at 5k miles.

When returning a lease, you need to have BMW star certified tires. The way to tell is they have a star on the sidewall. Anything else and you will pay for a set new tires at their cost.

My last lease, I replaced the wheels tires for other OEM takoffs because I hated the runflats. Then I just swapped them back on at lease end and sold my removed set.

I don't know if that's a regional thing where you are but I've returned 2 bmws and as long as you have any RFTs (if your car came with them) with 4/32 or more..you're golden, but the fronts have to be same brand. And rears have to be same brand.

Fiar point. I could be wrong. All I know from what I read and having one other previous lease was that the car needs to be returned with OE approved RFT. Many times, these tires have the black star designation and are not cheap. For my last car, I bought used takeoffs from ebay for like $250 bucks for the set - lol. Just be careful and get the pre-inspection completed, because it could potentially cost you allot more if you are not aware.
