Fuel Usage Anomaly

Has anyone else measured actual fuel use vs. the use indicated in the Journey Data for their G20 ? My last two tankfuls (M340i) have got slightly poorer economy than the computer tells me. For the last tankful, I did 527 Km and used 45.46 litres, which equates to 8.62 l/100 km (my math was wrong in prior version of this post), whereas the car indicated 8.4 l/100 km .... a small difference.

I think the estimate is built on a default and then adjusts based on your driving experience. Based on your join date, it looks like you probably just got the car so it hasn't had time to build an estimate based on your driving.

It does appear that you may drive with a lead foot. If so, your kpl estimate will likely drop.

I have measured mileage over several tanks in the M340i xDrive. The onboard computer is optimistic by 0.8 or 0.9 mpg. For example, trip computer will display 23.6 mpg, but when I do the math based upon actual miles and gallons, it's 22.7 mpg.

In general I've found BMW on-board computers to be very accurate when it comes to fuel consumption. This is after owning many different models over the last 20 years, and ALWAYS recording the fuel consumption data manually. My current X5 30d (G05) is very accurate and only differs by around 0.5 mpg after each fill up, and normally the ACTUAL fuel consumption is better than the OBC. However, the OBC on my 318i (F30) is not remotely accurate, even after 2 years and 30,000km. It's usually over-optimistic by around 4 mpg, sometimes more.

I'll be taking delivery of a 330e Touring (G21) in the next week or so, and I'm looking forward to seeing how accurate that is.

My experience is that onboard computers often have a hard time giving exact numbers if you drive short distances. All my cars behave that way at least.
One is almost spot on when going from full to empty in one day but is off by at least 0.1l/100km if I just drive around town for a few weeks
