New M440i....traded M850 Gran Coupe

I just picked up a Black Sapphire Shadowline trim M440i xDrive today. I didn't need the M850 space anymore, and do very limited miles now (no business meetings, travel, due to COVID) so decided to get something different, but stay in the BMW family. My first impressions are that while the M440 is nearly half the price, it isn't half the car. If we must talk about the grille, in person it is very appealing and in my opinion it does does look great in black.

Looks very nice. How does it compare with your 8 series in terms of handling, suspension comfort and overall luxury?

I like the grill; not sure what all the fuss is about. So long as you like it and appreciate the car thats all that matters. Beautiful car.

It's definitely not as luxurious as the M850, but in terms of usable technology it's very similar. The mild hybrid 48V makes the start stop so smooth I haven't turned it off, while on the M850 it was very abrupt.

What about the handling and suspension?

1/2 the price, 3/4 the car would you say? Or whereabouts?

What about the handling and suspension?
Handling and suspension is good. Obviously a shorter wheelbase aids turn in compared to the long Gran Coupe. Ride is compliant in Comfort.
Engine is a slight disappointment but I've come from 3 consecutive BMW V8's...it has lots of torque but a slight lack of character. Having said that I am respecting the break-in guidelines...for now.

Funny you ask, as ten minutes in I said "this is 4/5 of the car for half the price". The criticism often leveled at the 8 series is that the interior isn't quite special enough for the flagship model.

Great to hear. Particularly regarding the interior as that's been my main focus influencing my decision to buy an M440 here. As much flak as everyone's been giving the G22 for the nose, I keep saying I'm worried more about the performance and interior since that's what I'll be dealing with 95% of the time. So particularly from someone going from an 8 series to a 4 series, it's great to hear your impressions here.

OP "the grille is nice".
Also OP - posts side pics.

Just kidding. Congrats and enjoy the ride!! Black is best color for it, I agree.

I've been wondering for a couple of weeks now whether the M440i isn't the better M850i all together? It's way more practical with a usable backseat. Half the cost, not only in acquisition, but also in using. Although the engine packs clearly less punch, apparently still a splendid motor for spirited driving with of course the only real 6 inline smoothness. I wonder whether on term and as an overall ownership experience, you really would score this car as anything less than the M850i. And of course, that's a mighty reference!

Is that black grill an option or dealer installed item?

There's an m performance grill that's a cf surround with the honeycomb blacked out, i was just curious if yours was entirely blacked out

It would be nice if they offered an all black grill without having to get the cf surround like this
