When I hardwired our radar detector in the 2019 330i, nobody had figured out what pins to use yet, so I ran the power to the front fuse panel. The other day, I uninstalled that detector in preparation of taking delivery of our new 2022 m340i. That uninstall reminded me of what a PITA it was. I was dreading the reinstall on the new car. Then I found this thread.

THANK YOU!!!

Install was perfect on the 2022 m340i and it took 6 minutes for the detector to power off.

Looking from the headliner to the plastic trim I don't seem a seam to try and use trim tools to pry apart at like others have described. I do see a seam on the smaller rounded black piece but that does not looks like it would expose the wires. Maybe I just am misunderstanding what comes off but from pictures it looks like two pieces which I don't see.

Does anyone have any idea?
I figured it out. I popped the cover off that is up against the headliner then was to separate the two half's. As others mentioned I did break some small plastic pieces but everything does go back together normally and you can't tell.
Did you just pull on the cover to get it off? Having the same issue and can't figure out how to get the cover off to expose the top seams

Just use a plastic trim tool or credit card to separate the 2 halves. I've done this several times on several cars with no broken tabs.

A little off topic, but in the 2nd picture on the original post there is a copper-looking ribbon attached to the windshield. Anyone know what this is? I'm guessing a heating element to keep ice off the sensors behind the windshield. Maybe this also explains why there are vents in the plastic housing surrounding the mirror mount, so heat can be extracted.

For those who have their radar detectors mounted and mirror tapped, is it easily removable or is it semi permanent? I like the clean install look but I want to be able to take it down easily when I’m not using it or to keep from getting it stolen.

Very easy to remove. I always take mine down in parking lots. Just tuck the cord with the power plug behind the mirror and it can't be seen.

Do you have it wired to a constant 12v source, or switched? Sounds like it is staying on after you park.

Where are you taking power from?

It’s hardwired to my rearview mirror, followed the same steps as on this thread. 12v to red ground to brown/black. This also worked on my F80 not sure why it’s different with this car.

Found out it is staying on. Walked outside past car, did not have my keys on me and noticed the radar detector was still on after about 2-4 hours of being home.

I know there’s a battery saver setting on the R3 you can enable but even that doesn’t kick in until 1 hr I believe

Easily removable, but it also is tucked and hard to see the detector mounted up high on the window, so I don't remove it often.

I wonder why your mirror tapped does not power down then?

With the mirror tap, it takes a few minutes for the car to power down the accessories and "sleep" after you park. Approaching the car with my keys wakes it up, so to check I need to approach without my keys to verify it has powered down. If you verify it is powered down, then I might say correlation is not causation here. That is, the issue may be caused by something other than the detector install.

If you unplug the detector, do you get the same message?
Verified it is staying on. Walked outside past the car last night with no keys after about 2-3 hours of being home and it was still on.

Going to have to power it off or unplug every time I get out the car from now on I guess. The R3 has a battery saver setting but I believe it kicks in after an hour if you enable the setting

Can you share a picture of which wires you are tapping into?

Did you perhaps tap into the wrong wire? I have a G87 M2 and heard that the process should be the same on all of the G platform cars, but maybe they changed something on the LCI models with iDrive 8+?

Just got around to hardwiring the radar in today, and like everyone else said, you don't need to remove the black plug to install the taps. I tried for 20 minutes to get that plug off using every method and it was a complete bitch and refused to come off. I actually ended up breaking the edge of the clip but thankfully that doesn't seem to have any effect on anything since it was just plastic and wasn't actually in contact with any of the wires or anything. Anyways, that made me give up on trying to remove the plug altogether and I just plugged it in directly. Tested the connection and it powers off my Uniden R7 within 10-15 minutes and homelink still works with me. Doesn't seem to cause any codes on Bimmerlink either.

I like the place where you mounted your radar.
What mount are you using?

It is the thin metal mount that came with the R8. Its held on with suction cups and hasn't had any problems there. Nice and hidden.

Nice, I will try to use that to mount it a little higher to have a clear un-obstructing view.

The wires look very different on my 2020 M340i. I have two black and brown cables, although one looks more yellow than brown.

So, I used a voltmeter to figure out which cable was the ground (found it!), but none of the wires provide 12v.

After putting everything back together, the HomeLink is not working anymore

Anyone any tips?

Ps: I'm trying to install my ValentineOne

An update for anyone who needs this info down the road.

I checked the fuse box and yes indeed, the fuse for the mirror had blown. While I had access to the fuse box, I decided to go that route instead of the mirror tap. It's super easy, identical to the X3 guide that I found here: https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1667901

Fuse #46 is the same (cigarette lighter) in my M340i as the X3.

Tbh, I don't understand why anyone would prefer to go the mirror tap route.
