Motormouth: New BMW M340 // The 3 Series Is Back

This is a 3-series review focused on the M340. It specifically references the Hyundai G70.

I've generally found his reviews to be pretty fair and honest.

I really wish there were more reviews of the M340i out there.

I found this review to be pretty disappointing coming from him. He barely mentioned anything about the car's handling, steering, suspension, etc. He basically glossed over any relevant information and focused too much on design, tech, and just saying that the car beats the Genesis, without any information to back it up (not that I doubt it, but I would've like'd to here more about how the car actually drives). Luckily I'll find out tomorrow how it drives when I test drive it.

If M340i didn’t beat Huidai-Kia it would be time for BMW to fold up the picnic and go home.

If you factor in cost, then I think the G70 3.3t handily beats the 330i which is what it competes with in price. The M340i starts at $54,000 and the 3.3t TOPS OUT at $50,495. Regardless of what you think of Hyundai, they have made a very good sport sedan here. No need to get badge snobby.

Watched the whole video. Agree with everything he said.
What’s wrong with badge snobby? That’s part of owning a BMW and paying BMW money.
Everyone who will buy Genesis over M340i will do it only to save money, nothing else. They can talk themselves into it by finding a favorable review or even the fact that’s it’s being compared to a BMW. And then it’s good enough or close enough type of inner voice to save a buck will prevail.

We don’t need to factor in cost. Car vs Car is the question. Then if you can’t afford a BMW then get a Genesis but don’t pretend it’s just as good or close or you drove it and you liked it better or some obscure review proclaimed it better to make yourself to feel better about your purchase.
Own it! I know M3 is a better car than mine but I’m not pretending that for the money for my needs in my age with my job blah blah blah it’s better. It’s simply not

I drove the G70 3.3T. It is a very nice car, I don't know about "Car of the Year", but nice. It is a bargain for what you get, I paid thousands more for my M340i. The problem for me is that my wife drives a Hyundai Sonata, so during the test drive I could not help but see Hyundai Sonata, particularly in the center stack.

A lot of people seem to be upset that the 3 series is not winning every comparo like it used to. The fact is that the competitors have caught up. The C43, the G70, the Audi (I compared to a S5 Sportback) are all great cars. You really can't go wrong. It really boils down to personal preference. It is a great time to be a car buyer!

The g70 presents a compelling option, that one can get a car that's - subjectively - as good, better or even nearly as good as a 3 series for up to 5-10k less (depending on options).

Among the general public, genesis doesn't have the same brand clout yet, so it'll be a long climb to appeal to those who just want a fashionable car (aka the badge snobs).

Among those who want a nice, refined, and capable car, and don't care as much about the pedigree, legacy etc, the g70 is positioned to do well.

Among enthusiasts, I think it can be more difficult to predict. I haven't driven the car yet, but in some of the g70 reviews, I've heard murmurings about a temperamental transmission, and noticeable turbo lag by modern luxury sport sedan standards. Speaking for myself, if this is true, I'd likely pass on the g70, because if I'm looking for a performance oriented car, a stubborn automatic tranny combined with laggy feeling acceleration are deal killers regardless of its suspension, steering, and interior appointments. Sure, it's a value, but in my mind it's not competition for the modern sport sedan if it doesn't feel as sharp and responsive as the others. In that case I'd either get the bmw, and if I don't want to, or can't pay the premium, I'd just get a nice, lightly used cpo bmw.

If the g70 doesn't have these issues though, it makes a strong case for itself.

Funny I didn't really cross shop the G70. I test drove it and it was a pretty nice. Personally the design didn't appeal to me. Much like the Infinity doesn't. Just looks boring and generic.

However I very seriously considered a Kia Stinger. It's got the same drivetrain as the G70 but is so much more stylish and cool.

The stinger is a hell of a car for the money.

In the end the lease numbers just worked out better for the G20 so I got back into a bmw.

I will definitely keep my eye on the stinger over the next few years though for the future.
