I was only able to get 7% off msrp before incentives and buy rate on the lease in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I think it is a fair deal for the region.

No way in hell to get even invoice let alone 10% off in Seattle area. Best I got before incentives was 4.3% off. Emailed a couple of dealers in Portland and will be going with 8% off before incentives. I really don't understand why Seattle is this way. This will be my 3rd $60k car bought in Portland.

Go out of state then and make picking up the vehicle your first road trip (or ship it).

This is "normal" for certain regions.....

10% off US MSRP?

I see a number of posts where folks claim to be able to get 10% off US MSRP. I got a VIR for the 2020 330i xDrive and the base US Invoice price is only 5.8% lower than the US MSRP price.

How are people obtaining 4.2% below US invoice price (10% of US MSRP)?

Thanks

I ordered an M340i. I got 8.6% off before incentives. With incentives, I got a total of 15% off. I negotiated with multiple dealers, in fact I worked with 3 different dealers to get that price.

Very easy to get below invoice as you take total MSRP multiply by 5% and that is the dealer hold back. Subtract that from invoice gives true dealer cost for the car. In my case my car had MSRP of $69,920 and final price including $3k in rebate cash was $58,600.

Depends on where you are. In NJ, it is possible to get 10% before incentives if you do some works before step in a dealer.

Invoice is 6% off MSRP and hold back is 5% of invoice? So folks that got 10% off MSRP dealer still makes 1% profit?

BMW corporate and the factory can still provide unseen support/incentives to the dealers. We don't really have the concrete cost that the dealer "pays". You are also financing/paying interest, as well as usually paying a dealer documentation/training fee.

Additionally, most dealers make money off of their service departments, not really from the vehicle profit. By getting your car from them, you are basically setting up a relationship for a future service revenue stream to that dealer.

This. One of the oldest car dealer tricks in the book. "They say they're getting you invoice on the vehicle" , you get all ecstatic thinking it's an amazing price and dealer isn't making money on you. They even give you the vehicle inquiry report with invoice price on it. It's all a sham to be honest, there's a lot of holdback that we don't see going on in the background. Along with fleets discounts, etc. And your'e right financing interest and Doc fee are all pure profit for them as well. Not sure how that's divvied up between the dealer, BMW NA & BMW AG. But I'm sure it comes around full circle.

on average dealer actual cost on a car is 13-15 % off MSRP
plus whatever money they make on packages you buy like
wheel and tire protection
excessive wear protection etc
plus money on trade in
plus most people don't negotiate hard

I thought the Dealer holdback was 6%. I thought they get an extra 1% if they meet some targets, which about 90% do. Is that not the case? Is it just 5%?

Also don't forget to factor in the document fee. In NJ that is typically 450-600 with one prominent dealer group charging 699. So the dealer has moved a portion of their profit to this safe space.

Yea, but this is also negotiable. It's not set by BMWFS. As you mentioned, it's basically just additional dealer profit.

That is alarmingly high though. Around the DC area, I see closer to 300.

Right, so you should seek less than 10% if the dealer has marked up the doc fee

But what about the hold back - is it 5% or 5 + 1 % ?

Not really sure, but if invoice is ~6%, and holdback is ~5%, then asking for too much more than 10% without factory/lease support is probably going to leave the dealer with little to no profit. That's why I think 10% on this model is fair, though if pushed hard enough you may be able to get a smidge more off.

Speaking of GA, I am in South Florida so might have to consider that. Are there higher discounts to be had for cars in stock?
