Well dealer said the Body Domain Controller had died so new one being fitted next week. Don't know if it was the sw update that borked it but assume the update process killed it some how.

The Body Domain Controller, eh? That was always playing up on my 1975 Vauxhall Viva. A tap with a hammer usually got it going again.

Well makes sense if a Windows NT one as bl00dy thing would need a reboot after the slightest change to take effect...

I went from a Unix background to NT 3.51 and thought I had made a big mistake....

I don't know I fondly remember my stack of over a 100 disks to install, dos, windows, office if needed on one machine.. Cutting edge compared to the big floppy drives and tapes! #ITgeekoldfarts

I won't mention that when I started stuff was loaded by paper-tape readers...

Takes me back. Were you familiar with Kode, based in Calne, Wiltshire? I recall having a lot of their redundant cabinets and stripping out the readers and converting to storage for my workshop.

No. I only had a bit of experience with the paper-tape as it was in the process of being phased out at the time in favour of CDC disc systems which were huge and held an incredible 96Mb.

This "cannot release the handbrake" bullshit has got to stop, along with "no key for the boot". Stuff happens (or not) with electrical items, and immobilizing your car or preventing access to the battery (tnx, Jaguar) when the electrics play up simply not acceptable.

The perils of trusting modern technology too far, like using your phone as your key and not taking your physical key with you, then the servers go down...

You're not wrong there!
I've got the digital key thingy and never bothered activating it!
If the wife and I go away anywhere with the car she keeps the spare key with her in a Faraday pouch just in case!

I'll admit to having some luddite tendencies but at times I really do think modern cars have become too technical and complicated for their own good. To me it's just plain ridiculous when a vehicle can be immobilised as a result of the remote installation of a software update which wasn't even needed in order to drive the car....

Well she's back I'm glad to say!
All updated and actually on 07.2021.62 (6 something anyway) so hopefully won't need an ota for a while.
Only thing I'll miss on the 420 is the surround view as not had that before but certainly won't miss the rattle box engine. Honestly it was so loud it sounded like there were tins of bolts in the engine bay.
