And just to be sure, you verified the downloaded file and unpacked it to the USB drive using the Download Manager app, right? |

Never had a problem updating maps due to the battery situation, that only affects OTA updates. As long as you download through the BMW manager and let it install it onto the USB it should be fine. What I would do is try another flash drive it everything else fails, I have one that refuses to work when doing updates so I only use a SanDisk one now that has USB on one end and USB-C on the other end and use the USB-C in the armrest.

Yossi - I use a MacBook Air and had issues copying map update file to USB formatted to FAT32. When I spoke to Apple support they told me to use EXFAT which worked 👍
Keith - thanks for advice. Somethings there for me to try on this wet and miserable morning 👍 |

I tested USB with EXFAT and it was recognized without problem and the update initialized. So filesystem is not an issue here.
As Keith_C wrote above - downloading via Download Manager and proper installation on the USB is the key here. Download is in one huge single file, which needs to be validated and extracted on the stick into a number of folders and smaller files - you are not skipping that part, are you? |

When i did mine i inserted the USB but saw nothing happen. It was happening in the background. I went to Nav, settings and then Update and there was a download timer screen. Just in case you might be expecting something obvious to happen when you insert the USB.

When i used download manager for the new map updates to a mac, I just get one large text edit file which is 29.98 GB. How do I extract the files needed for transferring to 64 GB exfat formatted flash drive, any ideas.

1. only the big USB Type A port below the center console is capable of data transfer. All other USB Type C ports can only be used for charging (I know right?) 2. The downloaded map is one big (~30G) file, after downloading it to your PC, you need to use the download manager to extract it to your USB drive. After these put the drive to your car's USB A port, start the car, navigate to "Navigation" -> "Settings" -> "Map Update" and it was detected. |

That doesn't seem to be the case on mine. I successfully updated the maps on Thursday evening using a usb-c memory stick in the port under the armrest.

Definitely not the case, the USB-C in the centre console works for transferring maps and playing music etc.

Yep, I do everything through the USB-C port, updates and adding music to the hard drive.

I just updated mine a few hours ago. I downloaded the file to my desktop the day before. Extracted (unzipped) the file. Today I connected the USB-C memory stick and copied all the files inside the resulting (from the extraction) folder into the drive. Connected the USB-C stick into the port under the arm rest and the update message popped up immediately. I updated, reset iDrive (just in case) and all good.
You don't need to use the Map Downloader to unzip the file, you can do it manually as well. Just make sure you copy the contents of the folder you get to the memory stick, not the folder itself, and it should work fine. I've done this several times before and it always works. I have a 64GB thumb drive formatted in EXFAT. If you wanna follow the progress you have to go to NAV-->Settings-->Update and you'll see it. You can drive the car while it updates as well, no problem.

Mac OS includes a tool called Archive Utility. Right click the file and open it with it. It'll extract the files into a folder. Copy the contents of that folder into the USB drive. That's all.

Update latest maps all sorted.
Just finished updating latest maps, unzipped to 64 GB flash drive on mac which was formatted to exfat. Placed in centre console USB port took approximately 15 minutes to complete. My original problem was caused by me trying to put the text edit file directly on to flash drive without unzipping it to the flash drive. Thanks for all your help.
