Anyone know if the coming AA availability will allow the car to read texts from a Galaxy S9? Thinking of buying an M340i, and would like to have that feature. Of course, $20K Hyundais will already do that...

I have a 2020 X3 M40i and there is no problem with text interface. iDrive 7 reads them to you and allows replies. However, be aware that whenever the phone receives an update from the carrier, the ability to reply seems to disappear. You have to re-bood the iDrive by holding the volume know in for 30-45 seconds.
And BTW, I really am disappointed in the iDrive 7. Except for the quality of some Navi functions, it is indeed a step backwards from iDrive 6.

Re: software updates. I posted this in the UK forum (I’m in the UK) but may be applicable to others.
I contacted connected drive regarding the fact that I’ve had no OTA software updates since taking delivery of the car in September. Following their e-mail response I’ve since booked my car in for tomorrow 17/2 and have been assured the software update will be done free of charge. However the fact that the response states that they don’t know when OTA will be fixed is concerning. This was the response. “In relation to the OTA Software Updates, as your vehicle has iDrive 7 this means that this is available for your car. When a new update is available for your car a message will appear on your vehicle iDrive prompting you to begin the update. However currently there is a known issue with this which is currently being worked on, where the updates are not being received in vehicles. At this time we are advising customers to have this updated at their nearest BMW Centers for now, as there currently isn’t a time frame for when this will be resolved.”

Re : post above.
I had my car software updated at my dealers today. New version is 11/2019.41. After update my 3D remote view (in the app) worked first time (hasn’t worked for weeks before this). What has surprised me is the number of previous settings that we’re not carried over into the updated iDrive. Not a big issue but just need to go through setting them to what I want.

No real issues with the software apart from some intermittent glitches and 3D remote view from the App. Not working.
I am annoyed that OTA software updates are not functioning as they should and therefore any bugs that are being fixed are not being put out to users. When I got the reply (see my post, 10 posts above this one) I just decided I would get it done. Not something I would do regularly as getting to and from the dealer requires time and a bit of fuel. The car was with them for most of a day.

Same rationale for me. I had a dealer update me from 2019/07 to 2019/11 because Remote 3D View never worked for me. Remote Engine Start via app only worked once for me as well. I love those features and I did pay for them, so I expect to get my money's worth. Now, they work flawlessly as expected.
IMHO, there's no reason to keep 2019/07 if you paid for those features as the consensus seems to be that 2019/11 fixes the issues.
