Nissan unveils new lightweight sound-deadening material for cars

Weighs one-fourth of traditional sound insulation with the same capability

Nissan has developed a new lightweight material for keeping vehicle cabins quiet that it says offers energy-efficiency advantages over more conventional sound-deadening materials. It's demonstrating the technology this week at CES.

Nissan calls it "acoustic meta-material" and says it offers the same sound isolation of road and engine noise — between 500 and 1200 hertz for you sound geeks — as the rubber board commonly used for the job. Yet it weighs just one-quarter as much, Nissan says.

Wait till the massive lawsuits hit when this material is determined to be carcinogenic.

We all know that when the US began using asbestos in 1858, it's worked out so well....a perfect insulation with no health issues

LOL. Really? Someone pioneers a material that can potentially save 20-50 lbs in a typical sedan and all you want to joke about is asbestos?

Sure, it's designed to make EVs lighter and quieter. But we're looking at a typical 3 series sedan crossing 4,000lbs for curb weight plus a driver. Four. Fucking. Thousand.

Every technology that will add "lightness" to today's car is only going to HELP. Plus it doesn't look like it's a special material, it's the CONSTRUCT that makes it light and noise retardant.

....this is anything like the FDA vetted and approved pharmaceuticals that often end up on the "if you have fatal health problems from taking drug x....you may qualify for the class action lawsuit".

Love reading about your beloved Z4M and Corvette, but wouldn't you want to know what this new miracle drug insulation is comprised of?

So this is probably what they've been doing since the late 2000's. Instead of actually spending R&D to update their vehicles

Looks like the same sound deadening panels we use in aviation.

I watched the video multiple times. Unless the translated captions are off, the new “material” is simply plastic laid in a honeycomb structure. There’s no new unobtainium or cancer causing agent in it. Unless you want to boil it in hot water before you feed a baby milk through it.

The “material” looks like your run of the mill plastic. The secret sauce is in the lattice structure as the engineer explicitly stated? My Japanese is rusty (non-existing to be precise, except ‘domo arigato, Mr Roboto’) and I still fail to see how this is NOT exciting?

Anything to add lightness on a car is a good thing, IMO. Even the MZ4 Coupe and the Corvette, both could stand to shed 200#s if you ask me.

Well. When you can’t make innovative whole products for the market, the next best money maker in the auto industry is intellectual property.

If this material is widely adapted by the car makers, the royalty along could fund Nissan for the next 50 years IMO.

And this sound deadening material is safe for today - and tomorrow.

No, you need this in your street car.

Race cars are meant to be loud. No sound deadening material shall grace the inside and outside of a race car. Because race car.

Because why shave 75% of the weight when you should shave 100%?

Agreed. Race cars don't have time for antifreeze, they certainly don't have time for insulation.

Aerogels are by far the best noise insulators by weight, but price makes them impractical for automotive use.

Lol. The new Supra MIGHT spark enough interest in the market and prompt Nissan to redesign the Z car. It's WAY overdue for an overhaul. Use that glorious VR30DDTT, manual, RWD. Would surely be a winner.
