Premium Car Tax

Just received my road tax renewal and got stung for the premium car tax, wasn't told by my dealer during purchase about this charge, so not a happy chappy

Why would your dealer tell you about? You've got the tax band and the list price. Tax is public.

I was very careful when ticking options not to go over 40k. That's when the extra tax is applied, right? How much is it?

Hi all,

I assume the extra £ 320 for 5 years after 1st year is due to the new car price being over £40k excluding any discounts

Yep... it’s not the price you paid but the RRP.... i.e. original RRP before discounts....

It's just a basic research avenue before buying any car, I've never bought a car without knowing exactly how much the tax is.

I did hold out some hope that it may increase in line with inflation or be dropped for PHEVs in this budget, sadly not to be!

Kept mine under 40k and first years tax was £10! Obviously an M sport will be over that now with the price rise.
