Bought a Tesla Model 3 Performance over an M340i. BIG REGRET

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi guys. I have returned to you all for your wise words of advice. I decided to buy a Tesla Model 3 Performance which i have now owned from new for 4 months. During this brief ownership period i have >20 faults with the car and 7 service visits all mainly down to poor build quality. I have served Tesla with a rejection letter today due a few unresolved issues which is in process. I feel like i took a chance on a new and exciting brand in Tesla but ultimately at £950 per month (no deposit) i feel really hard done by.

Before i attempt to make this move to an M340i (which was my original choice before being seduced by the Model 3) can anyone shed any feedback on their experiencing from moving from a Tesla Model 3 to an M340i or vice versa.

My requirements are simply: good build quality and refinement, good tech, reliability, fast AWD, good handling and practical. My budget is clearly very high and if you think there is another car from BMW or another brand that you would recommend please share as right now im at a loss.

The constant reading of reviews and watching Youratube vids really put me off the Model 3 when was briefly mentioned as "a contender" by Mrs O. Just far too many negatives on the issue of 'build quality' and even Which? brought up.

To answer your q's, the interior build quality of the 3er is for me Best In Class, for long enough Ingolstadt had this in the bag but the 3 Series has the Audi's number.

Refinement of the ride is not as good as say Audi's or Merc's although you have a much sportier better handling car than either. The engine in the M340i is another win over the comp for me as I'm sure a few owners on here will attest to.

Tech wise it's good but can be a bit buggy in places but seems to be improving.

Fast AWD? Yes.

Good Handling? Again yes although some reckon the Alfa Gulia is real winner with the Jag XE also a step ahead in that dept.

Practicallity wise a hatch back/ Touring will always trump a saloon of course but otherwise i have found it suits us as a family just fine.

Cant necessarily help with the transition from Model 3 to M340i, but when I got my M340i I cross shopped it with the Model 3, C43 AMG, and S5/RS5. Decided against the Model 3 for exactly the same reasons you mention and just wasn't a fan of the interior styling of the C43. S5 was really good build quality, pretty quick and the practicality of the back hatch is really nice, so that may be a contender for you. RS5 was awesome, but I just couldn't justify the price difference between that and the S5 or M340i.

I think tesla are done. The big guys will have take the electric tech to the next level and they have the experience to make incredible cars inside and out.

I refuse to get an all-electric vehicle at this time. I'm not against them, but at this time, the infrastructure to support them just isn't there. Gas-powered cars can travel further and are able to refuel in minutes at a dizzying number of locations.

Yes, I have range anxiety, and until electric cars can travel 500+ miles on a single charge and are able to recharge/refill in a matter of a few minutes at stations all over the United States, I will continue to use ICE vehicles.

But just remember, you're not driving a "pure" ICE vehicle now. LOL (inside joke).

I thought I would be the only one... I came from a Model 3 Performance. F80 > M3P > M340i

My gripes about Tesla is yes... the quality. I didn't have to take the car back or get any additional service; however, for the amount you pay for the car, it definitely feels cheap. The tech is far beyond and great and the 0-60 3.2 seconds is crazy fast, but I'm glad I'm back in a BMW that feels premium. Not to mention the AMOUNT of Tesla's that are on the road. Range anxiety is real as well, driving 80+ on the freeway you don't get even close to the advertised range and if I had something come up all of a sudden there would be times I had to think about it.

I have to give it to Tesla though they do hold their value. I purchased a stealth Model 3 Performance for 51, sold it for 48... thats on top of the 7500 tax credit + $2500 in rebate checks.

I haven't owned a Tesla, though my brother has a MYP and it rips. I was tempted to wait for the new Model S but I just feel like Tesla needs another half a decade to really dial in their cars. They're great. Just like, not all there.

The M340 is just such an utterly enjoyable driving experience and I love a big turbo 6. You won't get anywhere near the explosive power. But it's about as good as ICE gets.

I would agree but how much performance is the OP looking for? My m340 is great but I will be in the market for a AWD M3 in year or so

I ended my lease early on my long range AWD Model 3 for my new BMW 330xi. I gave up about a second in 0-60 time but power wasn't the reason I bought the Tesla anyways. Just got totally fed up with Tesla's joke of service options, customer service, build quality, and lack of features on a vehicle at that price point.

The model 3 is a novel toy. The m340i is a serious automobile with decades of engineering and heritage baked in. There is just no comparison.

I sat in a Model 3 once, and TV screen is just too small for my taste.
Car tells you I'm self driving....the opposite to the main reason people buy 3 series.

I have been trying to get my friends to test drive G20 before taking delivery of Model 3.

Given G20(with incentives and the right deals) are cheaper than Model 3(at comparable performance level), and the refinement and build quality are far superior than Model 3, choosing G20 over Model 3 appears logical to me.

No doubt, when I looked a comparable Model 3 Performance was quite a bit more than the M340i at least for leases.

My Model 3 order was placed first week of April, and factory store sales said it will likely be June delivery. So that got me thinking of alternatives, and leading to G20 test drives.

For sure BMW aims G20 squarely at Model 3, and the value proposition plus refinement plus build quality of BMW did win my business.

With the G20 3 series, BMW seems to have nailed the refinement-to-fun ratio quite well; it's extremely refined in almost all scenarios, but if you decide to drive it a bit harder, it's very willing to dance. Of course, once you're done dancing, it quiets back down and gets back to coddling you in luxury.
