Anyone notice how the M340i has silently gotten a lot heavier? bmwusa.com specs say the M340xi curb weight is 3968lbs. BMW seems to be bragging about the new CLAR architecture reducing weight in press releases, but in the end they still went up.
Some stats. F30 curb weights from edmunds.com, G20 curb weights from bmwusa.com. All automatic weights.

That’s not cool. I thought it was a weight reduction of 121 lbs. (??).
I think the diesel version will have the biggest reduction. Found this on jalopnik: Quote:

BMW data/technical specifications: F30 330i AT: Weight, unladen, to DIN/EU kg 1495 / 1570 G20 330i AT: Weight, unladen, to DIN/EU kg 1470 / 1545 Our EU 320d sedan increases 5kg. That is due to having the bi-turbo engine. Without weight reductions in the G20, it would mean an increase of about 25kg, as the bi-turbo has a penalty of about 30kg over the single VGT turbo engine in the F30 320d. Honestly that's insane. This whole time I thought It was lighter as well. Most the articles I read mentioned the 121 lbs weight reduction. But it's all Hoax , shame on you BMW ! I hope some of those numbers are wrong, because if my new M340i is 154lbs more than last years 340i , I'll snap

Supposedly a 25% reduction in weight with the B58... *IF* that’s true!
Going to need a tune to balance out that weight!! Both HP and torque need an increase!! OP: Are your stats referring to “similarly equipped “ 340ix and m340ix? Keep in mind the new gen has a lot of standard items that were optional before. Last edited by BigSky702; 03-31-2019 at 05:19 PM.. |

its for a similar spec car though.
I know for the F30 the moonroof wasn't standard, and since its standard now, all the cars weigh more base. My 328i didn't have a moonroof, and thats probably 80-100lbs extra by itself. The f30 also came base with 17" wheels. So whatever the difference there is going to be added as well. Probably 5-7 lbs per wheel. The increase on the 340i will be even more because the m340i has the LSD and m sport brakes and other things standard the old 340i didnt have base. Also a nav system which no doubt adds a few pounds. it all adds up. Sad thing is this probably doesn't bode well for the m3 given all the stanard equipment its likely to have I won't be shocked when the m3 weighs in at 4000lbs base for the m xdrive version. The problem is that you're comparing a well optioned car (M340i) to minimum base car weights that no one actually buys.
The advertised weight for the F30 330i might be 3541 lbs, but I bet the vast majority of 330i cars in the wild weigh significantly more. Think about adding seat heaters, bigger wheels, bigger brakes, more electronics equipment, more power seat motors, sunroof hardware, all the cameras and sensors and wiring for the new tech options, etc. That stuff combined can easily weigh 200+ lbs. I bet that the true weights (comparably equipped cars) are truly lighter or at least close in weight. If your F30 has a lot of options, it simply does not weigh anywhere close to what the advertised minimum curb weight is. |

Totally agree on optioned cars, we typically run well over the posted weights. |

Overall the straight line performance will be improved as it's a significant power bump. And for a car that most will spend on the streets, it's probably not a big deal.
That being said, people shouldn't be defending the weight of this car. Regardless of the options, almost 4K pounds for an M340xi is high. The last gen S4 was always called a pig and that is the same weight. So the M340xi is also a pig but I'm ok with that as a street car. |

so from my point of view there is no point buying 340 ... either 330 or m3. 330 is probably fine dd and if you want handling and power get m3. 340 is a pig with ugly digital dash

I would reserve my final judgment until they test 340 RWD with non-metallic paint and none of the extra parking packages on non RFT tires. But yeah so far it looks that way

Hopefully the test drive of the M340 proves otherwise... I’m going to price out the M550i once again, if the lease numbers are close it’s a no brainer! |

and based on the weight of the 340i.... won't the m3 just be ... uh a more expensive pig with more power? I'm not personally a fan of the look of the m340i, but its absolutely fills a spot between the m3 and 330i performance wise. Not to mention if you did want a 6 cylinder automatic RWD bmw, its looking like the m3 might not be offered in that, so it has that going for it. |

the m3 will have weight saving tech hence why they will charge more but yeah overall it seems as if it will be heavier than f80 but probably lighter than 340 |
