Text message dictation without CarPlay?

Has anyone been able to get their g20 to read/display text messages without using apple car play? My BMW genius said without the wireless charger this can't be done. That would be terrible. Any advice would be great

That does not make any sense. What does the wireless charger have to do with it? That also is not spelled out anywhere with that option. I did not order the wireless charger and that would anger me quite a bit if I could not see my texts.

Be prepared to be pissed as I am. When I use the voice assistant and say text messages it replies "not equipped with this function"

Only with apple car play can you send and receive texts. I hope someone can tell us otherwise.

Text was available on my 2013 when I purchased it and then removed via a subsequent software update. My 2016 required "enhanced apps and Bluetooth" to provide text, yet this information was unavailable in the specs details and I did not purchase it. I had it coded in my 2016 but did not think I would need 6NW at $500 to get in my soon-to-arrive G20. as there was NO mention I could find in any of the available documentation that noted this. Also believe you get 2 more USB ports with it, also not clear in the spec/ordering documents. We should petition BMW USA to code this at no cost - not sure any dealers will do it without authorization.

So we belatedly find out that enhanced usb and Bluetooth (apparently still needed to support text not using Apple Play) are NOT standard and require 6NW. Oh, and fog lights on non-M sports are not standard (and not even an opt) even though they are pictured. Wonder what else is missing? How is this acceptable? Very unhappy.

So you need Apple Car Play not the wireless charger? I never saw Apple Car Play as an option. Apple Car Play compatibility is listed as standard. I assumed ACP was now a standard feature.

I don't think it's really that CarPlay is the actual requirement for text messages to technically function. My guess is that there is enhanced hardware functionality required for text messages to work, which is also required for CarPlay (which can operate wirelessly). Because you option in CarPlay, this allows text messages to also work.

I think if you enable CarPlay, then text messages have to go through the CarPlay interface.

if you're using the BMW interface, make sure you have "Show Notifications" turned on in your phone's Bluetooth settings.

If I recall, you will not even have the option to show notifications if you don't have enhanced Bluetooth. Text messages are software, not hardware issues. The older iterations of this feature, included two mics, which was a hardware issue. The additional ability to synchronize two phones was a software issue along with the texting, and both were available via coding. From what I can tell, with NO mention of 6NW or enhanced BT, G20s come standard with the ability to synchronize two phones but that may be a general reference taken from Europe specs. The hardware components of 6NW are the charging mat and two additional USB ports and with a lot of digging, this was discovered. But I could find NOTHING about enhanced BT. Oddly enough, it did show up on Edmunds configurator late last week as a component of Wireless Charging. I'm waiting for a callback from my "genius" regarding this issue as my salesperson could not find anything definitive on his BMW site. If true that text is not available w/o 6NW, or as a stand alone, this is disingenuous at best and false advertising at worst. I don't blame the dealer as they apparently were working off the same info that most of us early purchasers had. BMW USA needs to provide some recourse for this. The enhanced BT should be a dealer installed upgrade, preferably at no cost to those who were unaware of this issue because of lack of information.

ACP is standard and free for a yr I think. After the year is up there will be a charge unlike ACP in previous years. I don't really like ACP or the interface. I have had no luck with just the BMW idrive interface getting or sending texts. Yes I have show messages enabled on the phones blu tooth connection page. When I ask BMW assistant for help it says that texts are not supported. It seems as though BMW is moving backwards.

My BMW genius called his BMW connections and was told the wireless charging option (literally the only option I didn't get) was required for sending and receiving texts.

So now what can we do? Do we have any recourse? At least I still have not taken delivery. Can I refuse to take delivery and demand either the option be dealer installed, or order a new car? What about those who have taken delivery and are just now finding out about this? I am beyond pissed; not at the dealer, but at BMW.

Wireless Charging (6NW) has been bundled with Enhanced Bluetooth (6NS) since MY2017. And since MY2014 when it was called just Smartphone integration (6NS) Why is this a surprise with the G20?

VO code 6NS or whatever new code is for the G20, and see if it works. Problem solved.

I looked specifically for any mention of enhanced BT in the ordering sheets published on this forum late last year, and searched for any reference to it in available documentation - Nothing. There was mention of the additional two USB ports but nothing about the BT. There was discussion about syncing two phones visa BT, which was a feature of the 6NS for the F30. Absent any definitive info, I apparently made an incorrect assumption and now will need to get the software coded if/when that becomes available.

There is the possibility that the elimination of BMW Apps in the iDrive 7 included eliminating 6NS from the new Telematics hardware. BMW Apps handled third-party apps (Spotify, Pandora, Audible, etc) within iDrive, both thru USB and Enhanced Bluetooth.

Eliminating third-party apps support in iDrive forces customers to use CarPlay for those apps instead. Using CarPlay disables Bluetooth -it uses WiFi. Therefore, no need for 6NS for Enhanced Bluetooth features, while the two-mic hardware, two phone pairing features of 6NS become standard. However, using CarPlay disables the 2-phone pairing -Bluetooth is disabled.

Hope that this is not correct -texts in the iDrive screen and 2-phone pairing are great features.

I didn't realize 2 phones can't be synced at the same time. Thats a major step backwards too.

Here is the answer from BMW Genius regarding text messages.

Rob,

Here is the answer to your question about texting in your new M340 - PLUS some photos of what your 1st car looks like.

Drives - SO NICE !

Hi Tom,

In order to see texts messages pop up within iD7, (I-Drive &) the vehicle does have to be equipped with wireless charging as that feature includes enhanced Bluetooth.

You are correct, if he is using Apple CarPlay (ACP), then he can send/receive messages and the messages will appear within the ACP screen/interface, just not when he switches back to the BMW iDrive screen.

Hope this helps,

Craig / BMW of North America, LLC
