I read it. Here's the thing, I agree you can't discount all Tiffens, Hoyas, etc. Their upper echelon filters are pretty good.

That being said, my first filter set were Tiffens. After purchasing my B+Ws, I see a noticeable improvement in IQ. Whether that shows up simply as % transmission or not, I can't say, but the overall IQ is better.

I personally think there is a reason why most pros choose B+W, Heliopan, Singh-Ray, etc filters over other brands. This isn't like a comparison between Monster cables vs. Monoprice cables, imo.

I agree, most of mine are the B+W, however, i still take them off when i shoot about 50% of the time now, unless i'm shooting around my girlfriend on her horse, a lot of dust gets kicked up, so i'd just rather keep the lens clean.

It definitely comes down to the old argument, you paid 1500 for a lens, why make it worse?

Or

you paid 1500 for a lens, why not protect it?

Unfortunatly, i sit on the fence on this one, I both like the idea of protecting my lens, but i also like allowing my lens to do it's job.

I think Canon, or someone else, needs to come up with a filter that is a quick disconnect like the lens cap, so it can be quickly removed, but that would be over complicated.

Well, a CP has more functionality than just protecting a lens. But yes, some filters are there just to provide a barrier between the pavement and your glass just incase an accident occurs.

I've seen the revers situation occur. My buddy was changing his lens, and he thought he had his neck strap on, so he just let go of his camera body and he fell.

still worked after. We had a good laugh about it. First thing he said though, "glad it wasn't the lens!!!"

honestly.. I *do* have a B+W filter on it.. and all my filters are B+W..

the lens was purchased with the tiffen when the picture was taken... I didnlt say there's a B+W on there now because I just don't like the attitude over there.. it's akin to someone here buying VMR rep rims here and saying damn you got a 50K 3-series but but VMR's on? WTF, you ruined the car.. now that's stupid.

If I took two pictures with a tripod of the same thing, same settings only difference was to put a B+W filter vs. Tiffen or none or _insert brand_ and said pick the one that you like best.. No one will be able to tell me which was which.. or if there is even any difference in the pics at all!

I'm willing to bet money on that.

DO IT

All i know is all my L series lenses work better then anything else i've had, UV protector or not.

only time i've ever noticed the protector as an issue is taking a picture of the moon, then i took it off and took another shot.

well they make these lens cap leashes that are pretty handy.. i have a few of these..

http://www.adorama.com/LNCL2.html

sory about the "house brand".. these are probably inferior to B+W lens cap leashes =P or you could probably DIY..

I mean for a filter.

I actually need some leashes, but, where are you supposed to attach your leash to if you're always changing your lenses?

Most of the lenses I have and use most often are 77mm.. so I just use the 77mm cap.. I think they make ones that stick to the lens too..

I like this plan.

nobody is even going to notice (if it's possible) the difference it makes if they print a normal sized photo from it.

if you're printing a billboard, then yes, i can see there being a difference possible. But then you'd likely be using a medium format camera instead.

I was just thinking about the lens cap leash thing.. It just dawned on me that the design is VERY similar to the Wii wrist strap

i bet you could just use a Wii wrist strap .. tighten it around the lens barrel and somehow velcro a lens cap to end of it.. would be an awesome "free" solution if you have a Wii

Ha! I like it. I have a mix of Hoya and B+W filters (and one Calumet that I got for free w/ my 10-22mm). I'll do the same w/ those.

I have UV filters on all my lenses...mainly as protection. I don't care so much that I would argue over IQ over it. I think leemik's point (and forthcoming experiment) is spot on anyways. The glass you shoot with is likely to make more of a difference.

"Only?" That's like saying I "only" own a Ferrari and a Lambo. And here I was just psyched that I finally got to order my 35mm f2.

BTW, the reflective table top is cool. Was any of that post processing?

Sorry bro, I didn't mean it in that tone. Camera and lenses don't make the photographer, its their vision and imagination that does.
