I have the latest software for the headunit but my maps are out of date by a few years. How does one go about updating maps, is this a paid thing? Thanks

Yes the maps update is part of a subscription service after the first 3 years.
To check it has expired, you can go into connecteddrive upgrades within the my bmw app.
It you still have a subscription, then you can download the most recent through the bmw update manager

Note that the Map (regional) update over cellular and Map Download via USB memory are (or at least was with my included pre-paid services) are separate subscriptions. But I don't know how the packaging looks right now.
