330e fuel cap not engaging/opening
Hi guys,
As title suggests, flap is not engaging when the button is pressed. Happening like 1/8 times I refill and driving me nuts. BMW just fobbed me off saying they can't fault the push rod? Any advice please. |

Sorry, dumb question, what do you mean by engaging?
I press the button in the car, it says Ready to Fuel or something and then have to press the fuel filler flap in on one edge for it to pop open. Same as the electric charge socket.

For me it was press button, get out of car, press flap, would not open, press button again, flap would not open and repeat. Get back in car and drive off. next stop press button and flap opens

I’ve had this, but only when I’ve pressed the flap before the release has actually happened and the message comes up on the dash telling you it’s ready. The car can take up to 1 minute to release the cap.

The fuel filler cap release button, on the drivers door down by the boot release and cup holder thing. Says something like "Preparing to refuel..." and then "Refueling possible" after a few seconds.

It normally keeps the fuel under pressure, because there’s a good chance that it might be in the tank for many months, and this stops it from degrading. You have to wait for the pressure to be released before you can open the fuel cap.

Really? Normally fuel tanks are vented precisely to avoid pressure build up from natural evaporation of the fuel. I wonder how pressurising the tank increases the longevity of the fuel? I'm not disputing what you say I'm just wondering how it works. I'm just wondering if because the car is refuelled less (potentially) they add this equalisation process to the hybrid cars because it builds up tank pressure naturally. Certainly my 330i doesn't have this procedure.

According to the video, BMW hybrids have a special tank and when you press the button, aeration of the tank starts. I didn't know this but it only took around 2 secs to find this YT video explaining it so hopefully, this clears it up for everyone.

Here is the procedure to follow if the fuel filler door remains stuck:
I can confirm the procedure works on G20 and F30 hybrids. For me, the cause was the gas station attendant attempting to open the filler door before the aeration completed. That causes the filler door to get stuck in a partially unlocked state. If you wait long enough, it seems to fix itself. If you aren’t into waiting watch the video.
