Wireless Charging After-fit

Has anyone done an after sale retro fit of a phone wireless charging tray to a G21 3 Series Touring? I have a 320D MSport Pro Pack and Comfort pack. If so, any recommendations?

Daft question, but for what it will cost and how 'useful' it is, why not just put a USB cable in the arm rest, it will charge the phone much faster and cost £4?

I imagine if you want the actual OEM parts (if you can get them) you'd be looking at hundreds plus fitting, and maybe have to get coding done?

Yeah, it’s a fair point but the charging point on my phone (where cable plugs in) is intermittent faulty so have to use wireless charging when out of car. Don’t want to spend a fortune though and have seen some QI charging plates on amazon that’ll work.

An easy way and probably cheaper way of wireless charging would be to purchase an armrest tray off Ebay.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284453961...YAAOSwXmBhQwhn

And glue a fast charging pad underneath it and plug it into the USB-C post in the armrest.

Seen a post on here a while back where someone has done the same.

That was me. I glued a generic charging pad from Amazon under the armrest tray and plugged that into the USB-C in the armrest. Total cost was about £15 and it charges the phone without roasting it as the genuine one seems to do.

I used one from Amazon made by "JETech" but any generic charger should be fine.

Perfect, gives an almost OEM solution whilst the wireless charging option is not available.

Will be ordering one as soon as the dealer confirms that my order isn't going to be cancelled due to options not being available

Anyone using anything like this?

You can't quite see it on the pictures but I'm guessing it plugs in to 12V cigarette lighter socket. Also, it opens up for NFC card if required? Again, just my guess.

That's looks great. Does it charge well?

Is the pad that is already there easy to remove?

Hey Hoddos,

The pad is easily removed, pinch the central area and it lifts out. With regards to the charger, it fits perfectly, however, charging of the phone is a bit subjective. My phone (iPhone 12 pro) needs to be in a certain position on the charger for it to charge, if it moves 7-10mm to the left or right it will stop charging. I have requested a replacement as the charging locations for the my phone seem to change, and I think I have received a faulty charger. Only other issue is, whack your car in Sports Plus and floor it, the phone moves on the charger and stops charging. So I placed some silicone feet to prevent further movement.

Hi Mark, thanks for the detailed info and advice. I purchased a similar looking one a while ago on Amazon (which I returned). However, this one required to be wired internally somehow into the centre console 12v socket wiring. This would have involved lifting of the whole centre console. Two wiring looms were supplied and I was clueless as there were no instructions, and the seller was unable to help.

I like the idea that this one has an on/off button and a neat external wire so it can easily be disconnected also.

I have decided to buy one and give it a go. Hope the replacement resolves your issue.

These type just need two screws removing in the cup holders, pull out the cup holders then the plugs just form a daisy chain from the 12v electrics. I fitted one a while ago, took about 15 minutes and they look OEM with no exposed wiring.

I've been looking at one of these too, but was put off when I read that they can overheat the phone if used for over an hour in an enclosed space and I'm not sure if it will work through my folding phone case?

How have you found it?

I have an iPhone 13Pro BTW.

Regards
Chris

Personally I'm going to get an Apple MagSafe charger, and then 3D print something to slot it in place.
Not sure what that will look like yet as I haven't got the car, but shouldn't be too difficult.

I have the iPhone 12 Pro, and yes it does slightly overheat, but nowhere near as much as my girlfriends charger in her 1 series with the tech pack and bmw wireless charger
