Downpipe questions

So I'm thinking of buying a downpipe, but I don't want the CEL on and wanted to know what are the best downpipes out there.

I'm running the CG-Precision DS1 catted (about $1000.00 US)- no CEL and if it did throw one (which it hasn't) I'd just kill it with my Mission Performance flash tune. Tone and sound is amazing and the sound of the catted DP running through the stock exhaust is something special (leaves me not wanting for anything more - the difference is significant but nice)

I'm a big fan of AA as well. The CG product was so nice I really felt bad having it installed - I kinda felt like I should have simply displayed it as a piece of art in the garage or on my desk. Others are in the same league and maybe some will claim better - the aforementioned are just the ones I'm a fan of

Mike at x-ph.com sells most of the major DP brands at a great price and typically free shipping

Pics of stock vs CG for comparison

Thanks man I'm new to the m340i so I'm looking for new performance mods but don't want to loose the comfort, only when I put it on sport plus lol

I think the power difference you will notice will be moderate - but if you want a more aggressive sounding exhaust a DP will make a world of difference. Keep in mind we are already dual piped and non resonated from the DP back so any "exhaust" is really just a muffler - I think DP is the way to go

I have my MP tune set to be burbly loud and obnoxious in Sport+ and quiet and civil in comfort

Note:
On this platform exhausts and intakes will give you sound but little to no measurable power gains - your engine will wake up with a DP and a tune or piggyback. Given the fact that you have a 2020 I would not consider a piggyback and would go straight to the flash at home for power gains. My 2020 is putting down 475ish wheel (so 525+ crank) with simply a flash and DP and some E30. Subtract about 5% if I'm running 91 cali crap gas. And smooth enough that my daughter took her driving test in the car and my 82 year old mother doesn't complain. Just like oem - albeit a lot more oem

Active Autowerke, CG Precision, Fabspeed, and Akrapovic do not throw a check engine light.

Active is the most popular option for us because its the most readily available, with EPA approved cats, and not as expensive as Fabspeed or Akrapovic

AA all the way. I installed mine a few months ago and couldn't be happier. No CEL, sporty, and an all around great product. The sound is worthy enough of not needing an exhaust. On the pricey side, but we'll worth it. Wouldn't have it any other way. Take the leap!

chenry - do you feel the DP from AA is worth the extra $$ vs the DP from CG?

I would not hesitate to run either one - I would check with Mike for lead times - that may help you with your decision

+1 for AA. I’ve had mine installed for about a year now and it’s been perfect. Like Chenry mentioned, you really need a tune or something like a JB4 to unlock any power gains. I paired mine with a JB4 since I have a 2021.

Yes, I have a 2020 though so I never lost my burbles.

Sounds louder, more natural, and the pops have turned into bangs lol

I'll try to make a video when I'm back in town

I'm a big fan of my CG-1 Downpipe despite the intermittent CEL. It's been on about 50% of the miles (about 2k). I'm going to live with it for a year and hope that number decrease to once in a blue moon. Worth noting for those that can't flash their cars to remove the CEL. I was able to pass inspection by going on a day that it was off.

You could consider adding this to your setup http://www.bigdaddiesgarage.com/mini-cat-cel-fix.html

This worked to get rid of the CEL from a high flow downpipe in my previous car.
