Buy out M340i lease vs. G70

I have a fully loaded 2020 M340i, every option, and the lease ends July.

Has anybody narrowed it down to and decided between buying out their lease vs. leasing a new G70?

I was going to get an i4 M50 or an M440i GC, but I don’t want the total payment to inch even closer to the $1000 mark. I currently pay $815 (actual lease price is $762), and my husband’s SQ5 is $776. Adding insurance, I’m just sick of paying that much for cars.

I don’t want to start having problems with my car, but I equally don’t love the G70 interior. What did you end up doing?

My lease is also up later in 2022 and I am trying to decide what to do. I really want to get the i4 M50 but not sure about how the lease deals will eventually pan out so don’t want to place an order right now.
The problem is that the car market is crazy these days - no discounts, dealers asking above MSRP, missing equipment etc. Let’s see if things settle down in a few months… otherwise I might just buy out my M340i - which will be a first for me.

Curious about you guys contemplating the i4 M50. Are you thinking about this model simply because it's an EV (and of course high performance with its high output) or do you have no concerns over it's fairly short range (225 miles)? For me, if I get an EV I would want it to go farther than that.

The range is not a problem for me. I have a fairly short commute, and will not be taking it out of the city.

The range is/was a concern, but I only drive ~45 miles/day. I do take one ~306 mile trip per month, so I'd have to stop to charge once.

More of a concern was that as EV adoption increases, the availability of charging stations keeps dropping. There's frequently a line of people waiting for the Tesla chargers on the Turnpike rest stops now, and with gas prices increasing I can only imagine it getting worse in the short term. I don't want to have to wait an hour to then charge for an hour.

But I ultimately decided I just don't want to pay that much for a car.

Admittedly I've still got a long ways to go before my lease is up and will have the luxury of seeing how things pan out over the coming 2 years +. I was just wondering how the i4 M50 came into the realm of contemplation considering how different(?) it is. I mean I get the EV aspect but I think I'm going to enjoy my M340ix and the joys of an ICE for a while, and quite possibly beyond the termination of my lease. It'll be a relative bargain by that time and I'll probably have low miles on it as well. On a side note, the G70 would never come into consideration for me personally.

The thing that doesn't attract me to the i4 M50 is the massive weight. One thousand pounds heaver than an M3(xDrive?) is serious bloat. I just don't see it being more enjoyable than my current car. I don't think it's going to be all that much quicker than our car either relatively speaking. That kind of weight on the chassis will certainly not make it a great handling car, at least comparatively.

At the end of the day I'll enjoy seeing what others end up buying, particularly those of you who currently own an M340i.

I can’t say the dealer experience with either of the BMW service centers, or for that matter with either of the Audi centers I’ve gone to has been anything to fawn over. I always have to rent a car (no loaners), and it takes all day or sometimes longer to do simple shit like an oil change or tire replacement.

I made the mistake of waiting (for an oil change) literally one time, when they said it would take an hour, and it took almost four.

Other than the G70 there really isn’t much else in the ~$700/mo range that isn’t missing equipment from the shortage :/

I was on the fence to buy out my semi-loaded 330i and sell it for a decent profit, then hop into the new M240i. The best deal I was quoted was 3K down, $680 a month - for a 230i M sport. M240i was well over 1K. I'm sure i4 and 4GC prices will be ridiculously higher than what you're paying, especially for the M-lite variants. By the time your lease ends, the semiconductor situation should get a little better, and you might even get a car under sticker. It's worth waiting it out.

I’m tired of higher costs too. Our payments are fairly similar to yours, and it seems like every time we try to lower them we dislike the quality of the product we have to settle for.

My 2021 330i is 8 months old and flipping it in current crazy market costs me around $2k (OTD $40.5k, current FMV around $38.5k). $250 a month surely is cheaper than a lease.

However I don't want to shop for a new car in current market, so will likely just keep driving the car for a while.

You are correct that Tesla is quite expensive for what it currently offers, and friends do line up after hours @superchargers to get cheapest rates.

Home charging is all good except in CA PG&E is not cheap.

And current battery tech with current energy densities and thermal runaway risks is still not prime time.

So it is smart to wait out a bit.

Same here. I can finance my dream spec M3 Comp for not much more than it would cost to lease a loaded M240i. Not a bad tradeoff at all

My current lease ends August and I am hoping the chip crisis gets better by then. I plan to extend the lease and order either another M340i or get an M240. I got a great deal on my current car, some of you do pay a lot for your cars. 800 plus is too much for a G20 period, that was F80 money back in 2019. As for Genesis, that's a no go for me (hate the exterior styling), the only other brand I would look at is the Alfa Giulia but the 4 banger is a no-no.

I took delivery of my Model 3 SR+ in September and had a Tesla wall charger installed a month later. Shockingly (no pun intended) there has been almost no difference to my electricity bill. We charge at home 2-3 times a week, so we expected to see a big jump. It has gone up no more than $10 in the time we've had the car.

How many miles do u drive per week? $10 extra is per week or per month?

A coworker's spreadsheet shows around $100 extra per month, for around 1100 miles and 300kWh, also on a M3 SR+.

He is on EV plan and charges at night, but the shoulder/peak rates push up average cost/kWh.

How would you compare the Model 3 to your G20?

Did you have a G20 prior? I have a test drive set up for a Model 3, but they’re still more expensive than I was hoping to pay. For a Long Range anyway.

Regrets? Happy?

Times have changed the old M3 prices are now M performance prices and I don't think it's changing. Everything is more expensive now. If you wanted to finance a fully loaded Honda Accord your payments are going to be near or in the $700's. It's just what it is .
