M340 vs Model 3 Performance

How do our m340's stack up against a M3P? Haven't really found a good side by side comparison video.

What parameters are you hoping to compare? 0-60? Luggage capacity?

Model 3 Performance is a sub 12 sec 1/4 mile and sub 3.5 0-60, so yeah it will beat the M340i by a good amount (if these are the metrics you were looking to compare). I'd still take an M340i though if it were my money.

Model 3 Performance will leave most cars in the dust for straight line acceleration, less components for maintenance, better technology.

M340i will win in overall driving dynamics, more fun involved but definitely more costly to operate

Thank you all for the responses. I was looking into 0-60 times 60-130 ..etc..
reviewers seem to speak highly of the M3P. I currently have a tuned M340 and was thing about a G80 M3 but I've been getting some ridiculous quotes and I don't think it's going to change any time soon.:

There are many things that numbers just dont tell.

The instant torque and throttle response from the M3P will pull at least 2 car lengths on you before you even have a chance the accelerate. Even though your car might be faster but it will take you a long time to pass him and by that time you are probably doing 150mph...

So unless you are doing 1 mile run on the runway at the airport, otherwise you will lose 99% of the time on the street or highway.

With that being said, if you are planning to race everyone at every stoplight for $$ then get the Tesla, otherwise M340i is a MUCH MUCh better car.

Sounds about right. I thought maybe from a roll (Highway Speeds) we'd have a chance, but that instant torque is no joke. Nevertheless both great vehicles.

You are correct. You do have a chance from a roll If yours is tuned or if you have a M3...

But that depends on how fast you are going when you start the race.

If you start at 100mph.. maybe you will win.. The issue with EV is, they lose some of their advantages at higher speed.

if you start at anything less than 60, it will just pull on you before you even realize it did.

I've flogged a friend's M3P and of course have my M340i xDrive which is not modified. The M3P is laughably quick. If you haven't driven a powerful EV, it's ridiculous. If you've driven a 450 HP car before, the M3P has that and feels like peak power all the time. It's relentless, not dropping power until it falls off a little around 120mph. Handling and ride are pretty good too. Jumping back in my car, it still felt powerful, but much much less.

If you want an EV and don't mind the sparce interior, it's really good. If I didn't already have my car, I'd probably get one.

Or if you want something even faster with much nicer interior.. but questionable exterior.

Then i4M50i would be a good choice too.

M3P is much lighter than the i4 M50 though.

I could care less. I love acceleration but it’s not enough for me.

I need a combination of acceleration, handling, looks, and the emotion of an engine. For me a sports car is a blend of experiences that come together, like a fine wine.

No EV does this for me, and I’ve driven and launched a Taycan Turbo S. You guys can have your ugly ass Teslas. Drive them all day and smile.

But I.

Don’t.

Want.

One.

At the end of the day these new EV cars are putting it down like it or not. I agree, they are not the best looking nor do they have the sound that a gasoline engine produces. I might just have to wait till M3 prices become somewhat reasonable. Till then I'll enjoy my E40 tuned M340!

^ I don't think the technology of EV is as much superior to ICE as we are lead to believe. Yes, they have continuous torque and don't need a transmission, but we also have to remember that Elon and the new EV makers are also going out of their way to make their products very powerful and fast to entice buyers. Coupled with tax breaks and quick 0-60 times, it's making a dent in the luxury market.

But so what... ICE engines can be (and have been) built that do nearly equal 0-60 times, yet they actually can launch over and over again, reach 200 mph, and still have enough fuel to go hundreds of miles (see Porsche).

So sorry, I support EVs in the trek to a carbon neutral future, but I think that their "inherent superiority" is more by design of the few products that have come to market than anything else.

If EV makers are serious, then they need to make a much cheaper product available to the masses that isn't focused on quick acceleration. For now, average Joe's aren't the current buyer of EVs, hence so many of these cars are designed to go fast.

Tesla Model 3 doesn't have "better technology" at all. At least not car related or driving dynamics related technology.

It is but i4M50 has more power. Carwow just had a video out.

M3P would still have the initial jump, but i4m50 would catch and pass it way faster than any comparable ICE cars.

There is something up with that M3P that they tested vs the i4 m50. Carwow has drag raced a bunch of them in the past and they are always closer to 11.5 sec 1/4 mile times (Carwow did a drag race just a few weeks ago against an RS3 and it did 11.7 sec).

It's a Tesla thread. No one is forcing you to hang out in it.

I don't think anyone is claiming the M3P is necessarily superior, but it could be a better car for some people vs M340i. It wins some and loses some in elements of both subjective and objective measure.

Regarding ICE vehicles that can match it in acceleration, the G80/82 xDrive can, but that's around $30k more expensive than M3P.

On a drag strip, they might. But if a G8X Xdrive meets a M3P at the light, i will still have on my $ on the M3P.
