Acoustic glass is available from the factory in Europe, but not in the US
While my interest is the forthcoming 6MT G80 M3, not the standard 3-series, I looked at the German G20 configurator to see what options are available elsewhere but not in the US. One is acoustic glass (Akustikverglasung) in the side windows (S03KA), priced at 200 Euros. It should not be difficult to order replacement windows from a European dealer and either install them yourself or have a glass technician install them.
The text on the bmw.de configurator translates to: The acoustic glazing side windows supplement the standard acoustic glazing of the windscreen and significantly reduce the noise level for all occupants. They minimize airflow and environmental noise and noise from the engine, tires and windshield wipers. This is especially appreciated by music lovers or users of hands-free equipment. A foil layer in the disc structure acoustically couples the outer and inner discs from each other. As a result, noises in the middle frequency range are effectively damped and the ambience in the vehicle gains in comfortable rest. |

I wonder why this isn’t available in the US, and how much these windows would cost imported

I can hereby confirm that this is possible without much effort, since my buddy has made that at his X4, except the glas is nothing else to swap.
Other continent other options, for example we have no m-performance exhaust here in Germany Thanks to the great European laws |

I think BMW NA resists adding these luxury features to their more economic (higher selling) vehicles, so customers are incentivized to upgrade to more expensive models.
As someone who went from F82 M4 -> G01 X3 -> G11 750i, it is very apparent how much better they design/build the higher models. |

You raise a good point. Maybe in Europe, where they have higher speed limits in some countries (Autobahn comes to mind), perhaps there is a more logical "need" for this option.

Acoustic glass may not be available in North America due to the longer warranties here and the fact that multi-layer acoustic glass is more fragile than simple glass. If you import it yourself and pay to have it installed, it will still cost less than what Porsche charges for acoustic glass.
At least there's a solution if you want acoustic glass. If you want Merino leather, which is available on the G20 in Europe, you're out of luck unless you wait for the M3. |

People in Europe will get a 320d and just fully load it up with all options because driving a 340i is just too expensive in fuel costs and taxes. But in America, it just costs a few thousand to buy the next model or series of car. So why pay for little things like acoustic glass? Also, if you want a luxury car, you generally want a larger car. In America, driving a large car is super easy. Parking spaces are huge, roads are wide, and garages are huge. In Europe, streets are narrow and parking is tight, etc. So even if you want a luxury car, you can't really drive a large car. So people will buy a small car and put all the luxury options in it. |
