Different B58 revisions/outputs

I know global emissions standards are complicating things for manufacturers, but there seems to be about 8 different power outputs for this M40i engine globally.

Anyone know whether this is hardware change (exhaust excluded)?

The B58TU (Technical Update) is the only one that is important going forward. It has replaced the original B58 in its various states of tune in most models already, and it will have replaced that engine in all models bar the few legacy F generation vehicles by August. Those legacy products, by the way, include the F3x 440i and F2x M240i, and their replacements will get the B58TU after they end production in 2020 and 2021*.

When we talk about the B58TU, there are two versions. There is the standard-output M1 and the high-output O1.
  • The M1 makes 250kW (335hp) and is used for non-M-Performance products (40i) which are those found in the 5, 6, 7, and 8 vehicle families.
  • The O1 makes 285Kw (382hp) and is reserved for M Performance products (M40i) which fall into the 3 and 4 vehicle families. In countries complying with WLTP, this engine has additional emissions equipment which lowers its output to 374hp.
The Z4 M40i is an exception. Instead of using the slightly detuned version of the O1 in WLTP nations, it reverts to the M1. It was speculated by one knowledgeable forum member that the additional emissions equipment I mention above could not be adequately packaged into the Z4, so they had to compromise by going with the M1.

* Although it is not a 3 or 4 Series vehicle, the future G42 2 Series M Performance coupe (a would-be G43 convertible has been canceled) will be built on the CLAR architecture and thus remain RWD. As such, it is likely to retain the B58 instead of switching to a high-output B48 like M Performance vehicles in the 1 and 2 family products built on FAAR have. In that event, it is possible that it will use the standard M1 engine rather than the high-output O1 in order to create better product separation against both the future G22 M440i coupe and future G87 M2.

While the B58 Wikipedia entry fails to include the WLTP information, the model lists are (as far as I know) now up to date:
