Side Collision Avoidance Really Dumb?

Is the side collision avoidance useless? I was driving in my neighborhood and a trailer was backing out of one of the streets. The trailer stopped as I was starting to pass once he saw me but I got the warning with the picture of the side of a car and my car slammed on the brakes! It's the opposite of what you would want to do. It tried to stop me right in front of the street so the truck could back right into me instead of accelerating to avoid it. I had to override it and accelerate or I would've been in an accident. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see a purpose for it and maybe I should turn it off because it seems like it would do more harm than good. Maybe someone else has had it be helpful but I just don't see a time when it would be.

Those systems always are conservative, i.e. they will always break instead of accelerate. The car does not know what's happening behind the trailer. Imagine this situation right in front of a red light, you don't want the car to accelerate into the intersection and get T-boned, do you? (I always remember that video of the Tesla avoiding an accident by accelerating full power - into the intersection at a red light. Everyone praised the car for avoiding the accident, but I always thought they were just super super lucky nobody was crossing)

Generally, the car will choose to do the action with the minimal possible risk. Breaking means lower speed difference = lower risk of injury/accident. Accelerating is the exact opposite.

Of course you could argue this system is useless, but it still is only an assistance system and you have the option to override it. In total it will help reduce accidents.
