Just posting for the record. The tint on my car is 20% all around (besides windshield). It's non ceramic. It's called LLUMAR ATC, it's just dyed but... has a 99% UV rejection. I have clear dimming issues in my car and in almost certain it's UV based.

It's LLUMAR ATC. A dyed film, non ceramic and 99% UV rejection.

Unfortunately you have to go with a pure dyed film or (hate to say it) a cheap fim, to see the least issues with dimming.

Forget about the cops, he is going to have almost no night vision at that tint level and the car is going to be dangerous to drive. If he has a accident at night the attorneys will be very happy!

I can't speak for everyone, I have friends who have there cars heavily tinted 5% all around with 35% windshield. The cars doesn't haven't ambient lighting so in the night inside the car it's very dark like if you dropped something your going to need the reading lights to find it. But road visibility was fine, after like 10 mins i would forget the windshield was tinted. Looking out from the side and rear glass with the 5% it was was noticeably darker but nothing that I would say hindered my visibility to deem it dangerous to drive at night

this is all a lot to keep up with - sucks you all are having this issue, looking thru some local dealers & trying to find what suits best
im thinking 30 or 35% for doors/windshield, 1 guy has 3M Obsidian ($299) 3M Ceramic IR ($699) 3M Crystallian ($559) I havent gotten tints done in 10+ years, does this seem normal? Any recs? |

It's been a problem for a few years now on various BMW models. I doubt 2021 is going to change anything.

It's still hit and miss for 2021 (regardless of what some might be experiencing). I was at my dealership yesterday and they have a demo 2021 M340i that they've tinted the windows on (no idea what kind) but I definitely noticed the same dimming and even tried the flashlight to the gauges and they all brightened up.

Can some nice samaritan please summarize the following. Thanks in advance
What is the issue? - Seems the dash displays go dim during the day with tint What models and options does this issue impact? - Seems like it is being discussed for G2X 3 series with full LCD displays. Would it impact F series 4 series with non-LCD displays - I ask because I am considering tint. What tint options seem to prevent/reduce the issue? - Seems lesser tints and non-ceramic helps |

After really playing around with the dial that brightens and dims to instrument panel it does dim on me but with my tints and my black interior it's pretty dark inside as it is so it doesn't affect the visibility I see it just fine. If I hadn't played around to see if I can further dim the display I wouldn't have noticed. The infotainment screen is super bright. For the most part I use the heads up the display. I assume those with lighter tints and lighter interiors really have a problem with the displays visibility dimming during the day time

FWIW - My friend who lives in Fort Lauderdale has a new m840i that has the issue, even in the Florida sun. So I have zero hope BMW is addressing this in any fashion currently. The only good news being that if it ever does receive a fix it should be 100% software driven, so previous model years shouldn't be excluded. Last edited by 2020g20; 01-04-2021 at 10:21 PM.. |
