My son's 2020 Hyundai Veloster already needs a new engine

Bought a 2020 Hyundai Veloster for my son as a graduation present. Mostly because I got tired of fixing his E46

The car has 5k miles on it and burning about a quart every other week. They finally gave in and ordered a new long block from the factory - after I raised holy hell.

There were several recalls related to earlier production years, but my research indicated Hyundai got good reviews and reliability scores.

Not that I'm aware. I didn't see any smoke.

Even with stellar ratings there can always be a lemon or two. Sorry it happened to you. No fun at all. Hopefully they get you back on the road quickly.

Glad they took care of you. With 10year/100k warranty they need to. I've had multiple Hyundai/Kia products over the years and never had an issue. Are you sure your son is not doing reverse donuts or hitting rallies in that thing?

I used to work for Hyundai and the 2.4s and some of the earlier Velosters did have these issues, but I honestly wouldn't let that stop me from getting one. Overall, they make great products.

He also needs a new set of tires after 5k miles.

You can get a bad engine from any manufacturer as between assembly, contamination, supplier issues, etc the odd bad ones can come off any assembly line. No engine has failed prematurely more than the EJ257 and people still buy them.

Agreed, good example is this M2C that barely made it 500 miles on Euro Delivery before needing a new engine: https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1648678

FWIW, I bought a brand new Hyundai in 1991 for $6K to drive to/from college. Beat the piss out of it, only did oil changes and sold it 2 years later with 40K on the clock.

Years later, I bought a brand new E46 323i and it promptly broke down with under 100 miles on it (faulty thermostat, started to overheat).

Half of the 991.1 GT3s out there had exploding engines.

In this case Porsche slapped a 10 year warranty on them and replaced with upgraded components.

Point is, any car or brand can have its issues. Whether is $20k or $200k. Difference is what a manufacture/dealer will do about it that determines how much faith I have in future purchases.

Did your son give it a break in period? If he immediately started driving it hard when you werent around he couldve caused the premature failure and you’ll want to make sure he doesnt make the same mistake with the new engine

No chance, lol. He is Mr. Conservative.

If it were his evil twin, that would be another story.

Well, they replaced the engine. After their initial bullshit and run-around (the oil gets hot and evaporates), and once I lowered the boom on them (lemon law buy-back), they took full responsibility and got 'er done.

It's running great. Time will tell...
