Depends what journals you read... I have a lot of faith in CAR & Autocar who have a solid reputation for their opinions! That said I have read varying opinions from different writers in the same journal so yes, a personal test of any car is an absolute must!
Don't get me wrong, I'll still read it I think I just don't have enough faith in some of the journalists who complain the F30 has lost its edge.

In my view each 3-series I've had has improved dramatically:

2007 E90 328i: Lousy/slow iDrive, cabin would literally sound like a bomb went off if I went over *any* pot hole on runflats, wasn't impressed with fit/finish.

2011 E92 335is: Loved the engine/exhaust, DCT was meh, less explodey sound over potholes. Car was kind of crazy in that I could break the tail loose even with DSC on.

2015 F30 335i: For the weeks that I had it before it was totaled by another driver, I thought that the interior fit and finish was a lot better. N55 engine was a bit anemic compared to the tuned 335is N54.

2016 F30 340i: The best BMW I've had. Interior fit and finish is lightyears ahead of antiquated E9x. I've sat in the new Audis and don't get what all the rave is about? Audi's interior styling reminds me of modern Mazdas (which are good commuter cars). Handling is excellent and B58 is the best engine I've experienced in a BMW. Puts a grin on my face every day.

Each 3-series has been a progressive improvement in my eyes, so I can't wait for G20. The only thing I want for the M340i is for the style to have a bit more dramatic flair. Every day in my city I see at least 5 to 10 320is driving around on my commute. I can barely tell the difference between those and my car...

Its still going to be plopped at the top of the dash, just this time the dash will be lower, allowing the screen to be directly parallel to the gauge cluster. Its going to look almost exactly like the new X5's interior most likely based off spy shots.

I read an in depth comparison test where the F30 was pitched against the Jaguar XE. Whilst they said the XE was marginally the sharper drive when pushed to the limits (something few of us ever do on the roads) the BMW felt like a car that had been constantly honed and improved over many decades (precisely what it is!!) and was overall the better car... the Jag felt like a new car with no history (exactly what it is) I’ve only owned e90/e92/f30 BMWs but I have gone straight from a Porsche Cayman (one of the best handling cars on the planet at any price!!) to my current 340i and I’m not disappointed! So I agree with you the F30 really isn’t the dog that some say it is. I have heard though that it underwent a fair few suspension revisions during its life to make it the car you and I are experiencing!

I think BMW's design has also been headed in the right direction. I just saw the new 2019 X4 an hour ago on the highway. It looked stunning! Especially the new "L" shaped LED tail lights.

Honestly I've never had a SUV but if the G20 turns out bad I'm now seriously considering the X4 M40i for my next car...

Agreed, the new "3-D L" shaped tail lights look very nice and modern, while still keeping with tradition.

I agree... personally the current F30 positioning is perfect for me. Sitting snug in (not on) the dashtop. I've heard complaints that it looks silly sat up there, like an afterthought.... but I actually think a lot of thought went into that positioning! I'll await making judgement tho until I actually sit in a G20 and see how I feel...

Yep, I've not seen one yet but personally (despite all the criticism it's received on this site) those rear lights look superb to me and I'm sure they look even better on the road (as you have said)

Exactly - current F30 is in your line of sight, looking slightly left/right means you have good peripheral vision of the road ahead.

I'm not convinced of the lower down positioning, but will see when it's out.

From what I see, the lower down positioning just sets BMW up perfectly to copy Mercedes 2ft tablet design, where half the dash is a screen. I'm more a fan of the current design. Even the dual hump on the E90 got a lot of flack but I liked it. But trimming down the bulk for the current screen was a great upgrade and still maintains the functionality. Especially for a car that randomly gongs for traffic, speed notifications, service, etc. I don't want to have to look down to see what it's telling me.

The only saving grace is if they make the HUD do more than tell you the speed.

I'm really jealous of the new Mercedes augmented reality navigation system:

I don't think you need the large tablet-style dash for that to work. The existing F30 screeen runs split content just fine, and with the bigger 5 series style screen there's even more real estate.

I will say I'm still somewhat disappointed because I remember a while back there was a lot of hype about BMW integrating Google Maps and Streetview into their navigation, but all we got was a mediocre "3D view" with spotty coverage.

Sorry my two posts weren't related -- I'm just jealous of the AR part. Yes I agree the current screen positioning is fine.

Audi gets nVidia accelerated graphics. Why can't BMW?

Maybe they’re fitting the new style virtual cockpit like the X5 & 8 Series to the G20, so there’ll be no real reason to look at the centre screen whilst driving?

Definitely at least an option, see the review I posted this morning.

absolutely agree with this. I don't get why people complain about it so much, its exactly at the right level for safer driving.

Like if you see how its done in say a porsche 911 its pretty hard to look at the nav while driving and looking out your windshield since its so low. I'd much prefer the LCD up high even if the dash looks uglier or just have a taller dash like say how alfa romeo does it than have the LCD very low.

Yep - means you can see the screen and still see the road with a decent amount of peripheral vision. Like you, I don't get the whiners who say it's not good.

It's. Safer.

The various models include M340i. The current 3/4 series configurator (USA) offers only 340i and 440i but from there you can select various "designs" such as Sport, Luxury, and M Sport. Other models offer the "M" designation at the onset; M240i and M550i. Is this just marketing or dies the "M" specific model variations sit above "M Sport Packages" in the pecking order but obviously below True Ms?

Rough example; M3 > M340i > 340i MSport > 340i
