If yes, then shame on you, BMW.
or it will get an m sport version of the MxDrive found on the new M5 where you can transfer all power to rear wheels.

Or is it driven by the better MPG of the 8 speed auto?

If AWD is standard on 340, expect it to be around the weight of a a current rwd 340i.
No way it actually loses weight, like for like. They'll add in new features to offset any body in white weight loss. We'll be lucky if the G20 M340i is under 3,800 lbs.
I'm not sure. They claimed it to be lighter than f30 which means below 3800

Pretty exciting line up.

However, no 330d any more ... popular engine, what will the police buy next?

330e downgraded to 325e, disappointed not to see a more powerful hybrid, esp with a 6 pot

No more 330d nor 330e? I guess they are going to a single I6 model with diesels as they have with the gasoline engines. You'd think you could just rename the 325d the 330d at that point to make it consistent with the 330i as far as being the top model below the I6 goes.

The lack of 330e seems counterintuitive. I suppose they have found that people will pay 330i money for a 325e, but not 330i money plus a premium for a 330e.

I wonder if later in the cycle we'll finally see an M340e or M345e. It seems to me that sometime in the next seven years the small luxury hybrid _performance_ sedan will be a trend that catches on.

I still wonder why anyone is surprised by BMW not offering manual anymore.

Even in 2015 we had articles that suggested that less than 30% of M models are sold with MT.

If offering AT standard on M340i means that we get msport xDrive where you can switch between AWD and RWD then i am all for it.

What type of stupid name is M340?

They are really catering to the low hanging fruit of society. Just call it what it really is, a 340.

I strongly doubt we'll see selectable AWD/RWD for the M340i. That system as applied to the M5 is by and large a response to Mercedes similar feature for the E63. Since the C43 (nor S4 nor any other car in this class) does not have such a system, BMW is not likely to be incentivized to offer one either.

I'm not sure if I am reading this correctly, but this is basically the death of the manual for all future American 3-Series. 330i looks like not even an option either. I'm sure there will be another 330e for the American market too which maybe will be all electric too? But we'll get the 330e one or two years after G20 intro to US market. If no 3-Series will come with Manual then I want an all electric 330e with 250 miles of range. There has yet to be a practical BMW with good range that uses no gas. I love driving my Bolt EV every day but I'd rather have a BMW as a daily driver. Despite BMW making stupid decisions, I'm still loyal to the brand.

Enthusiasts will complain until manufacturers go back to making thousands of cars with MT's. I drive a 6speed so I'm all for having the option of AT/MT. But I think BMW should only offer the manual option on "M" or higher end models and do away with it on the base/lower performing models.

Basically this is what BMW is saying: you want a true RWD sport sedan? Buy the M3.

330i | 265 HP | 8-speed auto | RWD/xDrive
M340i | 380 HP | 8-speed auto | xDrive

if you don't want the extra 1150hp from M.. then just order a 330.. otherwise you will get an m340 and like it!

debadge the m if it makes you feel better

It may come as a surprise to some that not every BMW buyer lives in SoCal . Or any sunny and dry place for that matter. Where I live, I'm ultra happy to rely on 4 wheel drive in my 370+ BHP car. With only rear wheels being powered, I'd need to use other means of transportation on more than 50% of days in a year (rain, snow)
Except bad news for anyone who wants to hit the track. X-Drive means heavy and understeer.

It may come as a surprise to you but in the past, BMW gave buyers options/choices.
Live in sunny SoCal? Our high-output 3-series comes with RWD as standard.
Live in snowy areas and only have one car? We offer optional xDrive.

They don't have to be mutually exclusive in a model range.
If the 340i will only be available with xDrive, then BMW would have taken the choice away by making xDrive mandatory and that's what people have a problem with.

But no LSD on every non M since the E90 means one wheel drive and nuked rear brake pads. Screwed either way.
